Robocop Review. Lacks The Amoral Wit Of The Original

Robocop Review By: MattInRC Does Jose Padilha's Robocop do the franchise right, or just well enough? Read on to find out!  Warning: spoilers ahead. The future imagined by Director Paul Verhoeven during the 1980's and 90's is almost as frighteningly real compared to the one we really got. Science Fiction has become today's fact, but it's more intrusive than we'd like, living up to the promise of a far more dangerous than we had hoped; but it was these ideas and almost vicious bloodsport presented in 1987's Robocop which have defined a generation of Sci-Fi/action films. That random mega-violence - which has become such a part of these genres - generated a healthy bit of shock among those who first witnessed it, and might have overtaken the entire film had it not been for the career-defining performance of its titular lead, played by Peter Weller. Fast-forward 27 years, and Director Jose Padilha has resurrected the franchise with a good but...

Michael Keaton Joins RoboCop

Michael Keaton is joining RoboCop , the MGM and Columbia Pictures reboot directed by Jose Padilha . He'll play the role Hugh Laurie was negotiating to take, until he dropped out late last week. Keaton joins Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman and Samuel L. Jackson in the film. “Michael is the final addition to the amazing cast we have assembled for this film, and it is so great to have the last puzzle piece in place," Padilha said in a statement. "It is thrilling that everything has come together to bring this innovative new vision of RoboCop to life. We’ve got a great script, a great cast, some killer ED-209s, and I can’t wait to get Alex Murphy back on the streets." Please Leave A Comment- Source- THR

RoboCop Hires A New Writer

MGM has hired Gran Torino screenwriter Nick Schenk to work on the screenplay for RoboCop . Jose Padilha is attached to direct the action sci-fi reboot. The CAA-repped Schenk had been working with Padilha, who co-wrote and directed Elite Squad: The Enemy Within , on the action thriller Tri-Border. The writer also has the original drama The Judge set up at Warner Bros. with Team Downey producing. MGM has been developing a new take on the RoboCop franchise, which launched with the 1987 film directed by Paul Verhoeven, for years. The studio is hoping for a summer start, but no one has yet been cast in the title role. Please Leave A Comment- Source- THR

José Padilha Talks RoboCop Reboot

Remakes are the film critic’s favourite hate object, mainly because it’s so rare that you come across a good one. So when director José Padilha – whose latest film, Elite Squad: The Enemy Within , became the most commercially successful Brazilian film in history – signed up for a reboot of Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 action flick RoboCop , eyebrows were raised. Slated for release in 2013, RoboCop might seem a strange proposition for a winner of the Berlin Film Festival’s prestigious Golden Bear award (for Elite Squad in 2008). Padilha is known for his unflinching portrayal of very real social problems in contemporary Rio de Janeiro: why should he be the man to present us with, on the face of it, another shameless raid on the Eighties back catalogue that’s already seen The Thing, Clash of the Titans and Conan the Barbarian open to lukewarm reviews? Perhaps RoboCop is a special case. After all it is, among other things, a satire of corporate greed set in Detroit – today a notorious exam...

RoboCop Remake To Follow The Original Film

" RoboCop " is currently still in the writing stages of development, but director Jose Padilha has revealed several details relating to the forthcoming remake movie. To IGN, the Brazilian filmmaker shared that his upcoming sci-fi film project will have the same elements from the original " RoboCop " film, which was directed by Paul Verhoeven. "Verhoeven made that film in the '80s, and it was brilliant," so the 44-year-old filmmaker said. "I think some of the humor and the way he dealt with the satire in that film, it's pretty much needed today, don't you think? We've gotta keep that [humor], by all means." Padilha further revealed that he will adapt his remake film primarily from the first "RoboCop" movie. "I think [the original film] is way better than the other ones. As far as grounding our approach in 'RoboCop', we are doing it with the first movie. The first movie is the thing for me, you know?" ...

Michael Fassbender As Robocop?

Michael Fassbender is truly the man of the moment, attacking ambitious pictures of all genres, from Shame to Prometheus, X-Men: First Class to The Dangerous Method . And he’s consistently good in these movies too, making smart choices and bringing more than his sheer charisma to the screen. So, really, it’s no surprise at all that Robocop reboot director José Padilha wants Fassbender to take a look at the lead role. He’d be mad not to. Appearing on Brazillian TV channel Globo 1 to discuss the selection of his film Elite Squad 2: The Enemy Within as the country’s official nomination for Oscar consideration, Padhila also talked a little about his Robocop plans. A team of Little Bleeders tell us that Padilha said something like this: I’ll film Robocop. I’m indeed writing the script, the writer is here with me in Rio, we’ve spent over the last 15 days working together, refining the script. I’ll be travelling this friday back to LA, bringing this new version to discuss with t...

RoboCop RespondsTo Statue Issue

If you live in Detroit and don't think that Robocop statue is a good idea, then Peter Weller —the guy who WAS Robocop —thinks you're probably one of those corporate bastards. Or something like that. We're not entirely sure exactly what Weller's message is for the people of Detroit, but he's sure funny delivering it! Watch the video after the Jump...
