Pirates of the Caribbean 5 Begins Filming

Will Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley return? Story by Matt Cummings For fans of Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, it's been a bumpy road as of late. Two excellent films - Curse of the Black Pearl and Dead Man's Chest - were followed up by two thoroughly disappointing ones, in At World's End and On Stranger Tides . Some have pointed out that the failure of the last two were due to poor character development of leads Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley, and that their absence in On Stranger Tides sealed the fate of one of the most successful live-action series in history. Still others blame the decision to feature Actor Johnny Depp's quirky Jack Sparrow so prominently in On Stranger Tides as the prominent reason for that film's failure. Debate was fierce over whether the Knightley-Bloom-Depp triangle was the reason for the series' early success, and whether or not that relationship should be renewed. As Dead Men Tell No Tales ...

Matterhorn Ride Being Developed Into A Film

Disney is developing an adventure movie project inspired by the Matterhorn ride and has set Jason Dean Hall to pen the script. Justin Springer (Tron Legacy, Prom) is producing the project, which has a working title of The Hill . The Matterhorn , also known as the Matterhorn Bobsleds, is part of Disneyland’s Fantasyland section. Opened June 1959, the elaborate ride was inspired by Walt Disney's desire for a toboggan-themed roller coaster as well as thoughts he had after an extended trip to Switzerland, the site of the famed mountain. The ride, a centerpiece of the park, was refurbished in 1978, with one of the upgrades being the addition of three automatronic Abominable Snowmen (aka Yetis) who growl at riders. The idea behind The Hill is to do a thrilling, fast-paced movie centering on five young adventure seekers who, for mysterious reasons, are called to the top of the mountain and encounter a Yetis on the journey down. Adapting Disney rides into film franchises is a pri...

Role Of Jack Sparrow Was Written For Hugh Jackman Not Johnny Depp

Jack Sparrow Role Was Written For Hugh Jackman As we all eagerly await the fourth installment of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise, and the return of Johnny Depp morphing into Captain Jack Sparrow , we learned that Depp was actually not the person originally planned to play the odd pirate. “I initially wrote that character with Hugh Jackman in mind,” screenwriter Stuart Beattie told Pop Tarts at the Advance Lounge Chair series in Los Angeles. “ Hence the name Captain JACK Sparrow .” At the time, Jackman was a prominent actor in Beattie’s homeland of Australia, but was not yet a big on the international scene, prompting the folks at Disney to dismiss Beattie’s casting contribution and instead hunt down Johnny Depp for the role. Jon Favreau to Direct Magic Kingdom For Disney

Jon Favreau Got His Mickey Ears On Jon Favreau is in talks to direct Magic Kingdom , the Disney film with the premise that the attractions at the venerable theme park come to life. The studio set the project up nearly two years ago and got a draft by Battlestar Galactica's Ron Moore, but a new writer will be set and work on a new draft under Favreau.  Favreau will be signing a development deal, because the project will percolate while he works on other big scale studio films. He just completed Cowboys & Aliens , the DreamWorks/Universal co-production that stars Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford . Favreau will finish that film for release on July 29, 2011, and he is expected to re-team with Robert Downey Jr . for a third Iron Man . Magic Kingdom is being produced by Strike Entertainment partners Marc Abraham and Eric Newman, and while the studio has previously tapped theme park attractions for films like Pirates of the Caribbean , this is the first time it has created a movie...

Jon Favreau Calls 2011 Box Office A Blood Bath

Jon Favreau Calls 2011 Box Office A Blood Bath Jon Favreau has seen Hollywood’s future — at least as far as summer 2011 – and it looks a lot like “Saving Private Ryan.” “It’s Omaha Beach, it’s going to be a bloodbath,” the filmmaker said of next year’s crush of big special-effects films, remakes and sequels. “There’s never been a summer like this next summer. It’s going to be bloody [for filmmakers and the studios]. As we were sticking thumb tacks in a calendar we realized that this is going to be looked back upon as Omaha Beach.” Favreau, the director of the “Iron Man“ films, is well known to moviegoers as an on-screen funny guy in movies like “ Couples Retreat ” or the sublime “ Swingers “ (which he also wrote), but he wasn’t joking a bit when he said Hollywood is going to be in “a pit fight” next summer because of a glut of high-profile releases that will translate to some big-name disappointments just because of the numbers game. Favreau has a sci-fi horse in the race, of c...

Is Rob Marshall skipper the next Pirates movie?

Is Rob Marshall skipper the next Pirates movie? Will Rob Marshall step in for Gore Verbinski directing the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movie? That's the report on Variety , which adds that Johnny Depp will return as Captain Jack Sparrow and that production is on track for a 2010 production start: There hasn't been a director at the helm of the pirate ship since April, when Gore Verbinski stepped out to focus on a movie version of the video game Bioshock for Universal. ... Though that film's lost some momentum, Verbinski has moved on to other directing and producing projects. ... Producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Disney have been meeting with a number of directors in recent weeks, because the studio wants to pull the Pirates film together and have Depp star in it before he does The Lone Ranger for the producer and the studio. While Marshall's involvement wasn't immediately confirmed, sources said things look good enough that the studio has begun casting new ch...
