The nominees for the 89th annual Academy Awards have been announced, and as expected, razzle-dazzle old-school musical La La Land has come out on top with a record-equaling 14 nominations. Hot on its toe-tapping heels are cerebral alien sci-fi Arrival and generational urban drama Moonlight , which both earned six nominations apiece. Hell or High Water is a welcome respite from the drudgery of this summer's movie season. Review by Matt Cummings Early Westerns - and even more recent ones - depict the bad guy as a black-hat wearing psychopath bent on destroying a town or wresting its people into submission.
