Though we learned back in June that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story would be undergoing some re-shoots, Disney and Lucasfilm have kept largely quiet about the extent of filmmaker Tony Gilroy's involvement, but according to The Hollywood Reporter's sources, he's had more to do than we all thought. Director Gareth Edwards was the main man behind the camera for the main shoot and is still heavily involved with the movie, but Gilroy has reportedly been given more input into the editing process, having been present for the re-shoots. Yet from the sounds of it, this is not Gilroy being parachuted in to take over control of the film; he's simply working alongside Edwards, as he did on Godzilla, to hone its final form. "There are not two separate editing rooms; they are all in there with their ideas," says one source. "Tony's a strong force, but they're all working together." As is the way of things with new Star Wars movies, the rumors have flown thick and fast about Rogue One , which is headed our way this December. Now, cutting through the unofficial chatter comes Entertainment Weekly, using its latest cover to report that Darth Vader will indeed be making an appearance in the new movie. That locks down a long-touted rumour that the world's wheeziest villain will indeed be part of the Imperial effort to keep the plans for the first Death Star out of rebel hands (nice going, dude) and that he'll be acting, per usual, as the Emperor's enforcer. Star Wars stand-alone movie Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will undergo several weeks’ worth of additional shooting, sources have confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter. Much of the cast and director Gareth Edwards will regroup in mid-June for another round of shooting. The move is happening after execs screened the film and felt it was tonally off with what a “classic” Star Wars movie should feel like. The pic has not yet been tested before audiences, but one source describes the cut as having the feel of a war movie. The goal of the reshoots will be to lighten the mood, bring some levity into the story and restore a sense of fun to the adventure. But it's also safe to say that fans were disappointed at the lack of scenes (only 8 minutes total) which actually featured the big guy in all his glory. So when Legendary Pictures announced it was moving forward with a planned June 8, 2018 release, fans were understandably worried that he might get the same treatment. Story by Matt Cummings When news hit on May 1st that Chronicle director Josh Trank was departing the Star Wars universe , it hit fans like a lightsaber through the gut. But speculation about his future emerged earlier at Star Wars Celebration , when he failed to appear, waving flu-like symptoms. His colleague Gareth Edwards did attend, showing off a concept trailer for his film Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One . As news began to swirl about Trank's misfortunes on the set of Fantastic Four - in which his behavior was characterized as "erratic" and Producer Simon Kinberg was brought in to finish the project - fans knew the real story: Trank hadn't merely walked away, he had been fired. Trank was recently interviewed by the LA Times - the first since his departure - shedding a new perspective on the backlash he received from fans and (perhaps) the real reason why he left.
