DVD Review: Dark Horse Just another underdog documentary

Just another underdog documentary but this time featuring a horse. Review by Erika Ashley A group of small town friends and neighbors band together to finance their dreams of owning, training, and racing a thoroughbred race horse. One woman, Jan Vokes, began working in a bar and had the courage and drive to approach her local patrons to join her forming the Dream Alliance. The group contributed nominal fees monthly that financed the purchasing of a retired race mare and aided in the funding of breeding costs and training. The horse, Dream Alliance, himself was a fighter and without his perseverance and the support from his team and owners he wouldn’t have even had a shot. The documentary itself is fairly slow moving but follows the story of a community and its prized horse overcoming adversity. The setup and telling of the underdog story is incredibly predictable and lacks originality. The DVD’s back cover literally describes the entire 85-minute runtime in one swift and p...

Blu-ray Review: The Duel Story Makes Hardly Any Sense

A small western film tries desperately to be an Oscar contender. Review by Erika Ashley In the late 1880s, a young boy watches a ruthless, God-fearing “Preacher” murder his father in a cold-blooded knife-duel. Years later the boy, David Kingston, grows up to be a Texas Ranger and is put on a special case when bodies of deceased Mexicans begin popping up in a river outside of a quiet town. The man that runs the town is the very man that killed Kingston’s father 22 years before. Kingston brings his wife along with him reluctantly to investigate the deaths but gets caught up quickly in the inner-workings of a much larger problem. Kingston soon finds himself in a duel, fighting for his wife and his life after he uncovers the truth. I cannot remember this film being released in theaters which forces me to believe that this little ditty snuck under the radar and was forced straight to DVD/Blu-ray. Surprisingly the with two big name actors as front-runners, Woody Harrelson a...

Blu-ray Review #SistersMovie

Among the many things that men hold an unfair monopoly on over women are comedies about adults who never progressed beyond childhood. Man-child comedies are basically a subgenre unto themselves, spanning from The Jerk to Dumb and Dumber to the bulk of the Judd Apatow-associated films of the past decade. But why can’t women also be overgrown children for our amusement? Amy Schumer’s Trainwreck this past summer at least scratched in the general vicinity of the itch, but didn’t quite get there, as her character was irresponsible in chiefly adult ways. Where the women-children at? Sisters answers that call with great gusto. The film, starring real-life besties Amy Poehler and Tina Fey, introduces us to the Ellis sisters, Kate and Maura. Maura (Poehler) is a tightly-wound nurse with a deep-seated need to care for and please others. Kate is the opposite, a reckless washout who can hold neither a job nor a residence and whose put-upon daughter (Madison Davenport from From Dusk Till Dawn:...

Chef Blu-ray Review

The cooking comedy Chef has its moments, but it's under-dressed for the occasion. A movie like the Jon Favreau comedy Chef begs for a litany of puns, so let's get them out the way. This undercooked but still flavorful comedy is missing key ingredients, resulting in something that's not quite a full meal. Carl Casper ( Favreau ) was an aspiring chef, a Superman Chef if you will, impressing critics and stomachs alike with his unique dishes. Unfortunately that was 10 years ago, and Casper is now heavier and a little more corporate, preparing the same dishes night after night. When local food critic Ramsey Michel ( Oliver Platt ) arrives for a tasting, Casper wants to make an entirely new menu, but the restaurant owner (Dustin Hoffman) wants nothing of the sort: he orders Casper to prepare his 'hits.' The result is a scathing review that insults Casper, leading him to quit after losing a Twitter war with Michel. Casper's ex-wife Inez ( Sofia Vergara ) feels ba...

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre: 40th Anniversary Collector’s Edition Review. Definitive Version To Grab

Blu-ray Review: The Texas Chain Saw Massacre: 40th Anniversary Collector’s Edition By: Brandon Wolfe The title of ‘ The Texas Chain Saw Massacre ’ is so bluntly evocative that people who have never seen the film have generally assumed the worst of it. The title conjures up images of horrific brutality and graphic gore, and that’s before you add the element of cannibalism into the mix. Yet, truth be told, ‘ The Texas Chain Saw Massacre ’ isn’t gory, or even especially bloody, at all, nor is does it depict any grisly displays of cannibalism. By the standards of today’s horror, the film is actually fairly tame. Despite the mental imagery ascribed to the film by reputation, this is not a stomach-churning endurance test. And yet, it kind of is. While ‘ The Texas Chain Saw Massacre ’ doesn’t saturate us with viscera, it remains, forty years later, one of cinema’s most unsettling pieces of work. From its ominous opening voiceover (gravely intoned by John Larroquette ) fallaciously af...

IFC Films "#Infliction" Review

Looking at the DVD jacket for ‘ Infliction ’, my heart sank. Over an image of several VHS cassettes, the logline reads “In 2011, two brothers documented their murder spree in North Carolina. This is the actual assembled footage,” and my instant assumption was that this was going to be another sickening torture-fest, with the found-footage format employed to show us all manner of horrible atrocities committed toward helpless victims. It was a relief to find that ‘Infliction’ doesn’t actually count itself among the ranks of ‘Saw’, ‘Hostel’ and all their torture-porn brethren. Though there are of course murders, the film doesn’t set out to thrill us with the sight of some poor schlep’s agony as his jaw is torn off while he’s tied to a chair. Its aim is something else entirely, and while it isn’t particularly successful at what it sets out to do, I was at least grateful for what it wasn’t. This is the story of John and Kenny Stiles (Jason Mac and Elliott Armstrong), a pair of brothers w...

Minion Mayhem Takes Over Universal Studios Hollywood

An original 3D, Ultra-HD adventure, the “ Despicable Me Minion Mayhem ” ride brings outrageous and heartfelt fun to The Entertainment Capital of L.A. as scores of Minions descend upon Universal Studios Hollywood. Based on Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment’s Academy Award and Golden Globe Award-nominated film franchise and created in collaboration with Chris Meledandri, founder and CEO of Illumination Entertainment, the attraction invites guests to embrace their inner Minion as they become immersed in an all-new story from the world of “ Despicable Me .” Helmed by (former?) super-villain Gru, with assistance from the slightly forgetful Dr. Nefario, “Despicable Me Minion Mayhem” captivates fans by recruiting and transforming them into beloved, gibberish-speaking Minions. The theme park also brings to life the first film’s memorable seaside carnival with the introduction of “Super Silly Fun Land,” an imaginative and interactive play zone unique to Universal Stu...

47 RONIN Blu-ray Review By: John Meneghetti

47 RONIN Blu-ray Review By: John Meneghetti This movie will get a lot of heat and make a lot of people upset because they may deem it as disrespectful to the true story that serves as the basis for this latest adaptation, but be that as it may, though they may be right and I don’t blame them for being upset, I for one do not hold that against 47 RONIN because this latest adaptation did exactly what it set out to do, and that is a fantastical, visual, stylized take. Taking a familiar story and combining it with sorcery and fantasy elements. If you want something that’s more faithful to the historical account, I’m sure any of the previous adaptations including the 1941 film could serve you best. Keanu Reeves’ 47 RONIN for all intents and purposes is entertaining. Keanu Reeves makes an explosive return to action-adventure in 47 Ronin . After a treacherous warlord kills their master and banishes their kind, 47 leaderless samurai vow to seek vengeance and restore honor to their peopl...
