The records keep on falling. Black Panther continues to be one of the strongest performers in the MCU after just a few days, and among the most successful films of this still-young year. With audience interest still high, the movie managed a $108 million weekend in the States.
That has pushed the movie to a $400 million domestic total after just 10 days, the second fastest film to reach that level after Jurassic World. It's also now the fifth highest grossing film in Marvel's sprawling cinematic universe. Adding in its healthy $304 million overseas take (with more markets yet to open), the film has crossed $704 million worldwide, seemingly making a beeline for $1 billion.
New comedy Game Night opened decently in second place, though far behind the current leader, earning $16 million. Peter Rabbit was pushed to third on $12.5 million. Alex Garland's new sci-fi pic Annihilation (which had a cinematic release in the States but is headed to Netflix elsewhere) landed fourth on $11 million, probably not the result Paramount was hoping for, but not bad given the film's tough-to-market smart, complex plot. In fifth, we find Fifty Shades Freed, which took in $6.9 million.
Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle slipped to sixth place, making $5.6 million, while The 15:17 To Paris fell to seventh on the back of $3.6 million. The Greatest Showman, which continues to enjoy great success with its soundtrack, was down to eighth and $3.4 million.
Romantic fantasy drama Every Day opened to expectations in ninth with $3.1 million, while Early Man was down to 10th and $1.7 million.
