Despite his usual power at the box office, Tom Cruise could not overcome a resurgent, scary clown as It rose from the sewer once more to regain the chart's crown in the States after being knocked down last weekend by those Kingsman. The horror movie added $17.3 million to its total, according to studio estimates.
The Cruiser's latest, sort-of-true crime tale American Made, wasn't far behind, earning $17.06 million, so there's a slim chance things could change when the final figures come in on Monday. But it appears It has lost none of its drawing power, and that it's not finished snapping records. American Made made do with second place, while Kingsman: The Golden Circle slipped to third on $17 million. The Lego Ninjago Movie actually moved up a place this weekend, earning $12 million. Rounding out the top five was poorly performing thriller remake Flatliners, which was sent to the morgue by reviewers and didn't find much life among audiences, launching with $6.7 million.
Tennis pic Battle Of The Sexes expanded its screen count and jumped into the top 10 at 6 with $3.4 million, while American Assassin continued to drop, falling from fourth to seventh on $3.3 million. Home Again was eighth, earning $1.7 million, ahead of little-advertised thriller Til Death Do Us Part was largely DOA on $1.5 million in ninth. And finally, the controversial mother! fell to 10th from fifth place, taking in $1 million.
