Can you dig it?
By Brandon Wolfe
The long-dormant Shaft franchise is set to be revived by New Line, who have recently acquired the rights to the character. The studio is teaming up with Davis Entertainment to dust off the black private dick for the modern age.
The original Shaft was released in 1971 starring Richard Roundtree and directed by Gordon Parks. A reboot/sequel, directed by John Singleton, was released in 2000 starring Samuel L. Jackson as the nephew of Roundtree’s John Shaft (who also appeared). Jackson was initially set to reprise the role in a new series of films, but despite the film’s modest success, the sequels never materialized.
No word yet on what direction the new film will take, but perhaps both Roundtree and Jackson can return to mentor a young John Shaft III, sex machine in training.
