According to THR Charlie Bean , who directed The Lego Ninjago Movie , is going to the dogs. Bean has closed a deal to helm the live-action/CG hybrid remake of Disney’s animated classic Lady and the Tramp. Brigham Taylor, who worked on the studio’s remake of The Jungle Book , is producing the project, which is looking to be made for Disney’s digital streaming service that will launch in 2019. The service will have four to six movies a year among content that will include film and TV offerings from Disney brands Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars. The fact that a remake of such a marquee and essential Disney title such as Lady and the Tramp will likely head to the service is another example of how serious the company is taking its streaming platform’s content. Variety is reporting Ava DuVernay is stepping into the superhero universe. The filmmaker has come on board to direct “ New Gods ” at Warner Bros. as part of the studio’s DC Extended Universe. “ New Gods ,” based on the DC Comics series of the same name, is aimed at creating a new universe of properties for the studio. Created and designed by Jack Kirby, the comic was first released in 1971. The movie marks the second major superhero tentpole directed by a woman, following another DC property: Patty Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman.” DuVernay directed Disney’s “ A Wrinkle in Time ,” becoming the first woman of color in Hollywood to helm a live-action film with a production budget of $100 million. For the first time since Avatar in 2009, Black Panther has clung to the top of the Stateside box office for a fifth weekend, seeing off the likes of Tomb Raider . The superhero smash has made more than $27 million this weekend, according to studio estimates. And Marvel's latest success story has hit another milestone, becoming only the seventh film ever to gross more than $600 million at the domestic box office. With its overseas takings, the movie has now crossed more than $1.1 billion. Tomb Raider could only manage $23.5 million in treasure found from audiences, earning it a second place launch. Will it go on to spawn a franchise, as Warner Bros. might hope? That will have to wait for its full takings figures to come in. Renee Zellweger would be taking on the challenge of playing Judy Garland in a new biopic called, simply, Judy. If you wondered what she'd look like, you now have the chance. Director Rupert Goold has now kicked off shooting the film in London, working from a script by The Crown's Tom Edge. The story is set in 1968 as Garland arrives in chilly, swinging London to perform at a sell-out run of her show. It's 30 years since she appeared in The Wizard Of Oz, and if her voice isn't quite the same, her intensity has grown. She faces battles with her management and charms the musicians she works with, while also starting a romance with Mickey Deans, who will go on to be her fifth husband. Yet she's also haunted by memories of a childhood lost to Hollywood and struggling with the desire to be back home with her kids.
