Relativity Media ’s President of Worldwide Production Tucker Tooley announced today the studio has optioned the feature film rights for Voltron ™ from World Event Productions, and will adapt the live-action big screen version from the 1984 cult-classic animated series Voltron: Defender of the Universe ™. The project was brought to Relativity through their deal with Atlas Entertainment’s Charles Roven and Richard Suckle, whose company will shepherd the project. Vulture hears that a bidding war has broken out to finance a Transformers-size blockbuster retelling of the legend of the iconic robotic lions and their human pilots; Ryan Kavanaugh's deep-pocketed Relativity Media is one of the very interested parties trying to sell itself to World Events Productions , the St. Louis–based company behind the original show. Japanese animation property " Voltron : Defender of the Universe" has become the subject of a legal battle between a group of indie producers and a family company that controls the property. In a suit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, indie producers James Young, Ford Oelman and Mark Costa of banners Animus Films and NHO Entertainment allege that St. Louis-based World Events, which holds rights to the television property, and its partner Kickstart Prods. negotiated illegally with other producers during what the producers say was an exclusive period. "World Events secretly conspired with Jason Netter and Kickstart Entertainment to find investors and make the movie without NHO and Animus during the terms of the exclusive deal," the suit says. Now something I can get pumped about. Looks like the Voltron Movie is back in the loop. As a kid who grew up in Japan I loved Voltron Even more then Transformers. I Remember playing with them all day with Friends in the front yard. Dam I getting wood just thinking that some day soon in the near future there could be a movie. More toys to buy also. Dam there goes the Kids college fund. Let's get the buzz started on this one.
