The untitled Terminator film, colloquially referred to as Terminator 6 , is an upcoming 2019 American science fiction action film directed by Tim Miller with a screenplay written by David S. Goyer. The film's story was conceived by Miller, series co-creator James Cameron and David Ellison, with the latter two serving as producers alongside Dana Goldberg. It will be the sixth installment in the Terminator franchise and serves as a direct sequel to The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day , disregarding the subsequent films and The Sarah Connor Chronicles television series as occurring in alternate timelines. The film will star Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, Mackenzie Davis, Gabriel Luna, Natalia Reyes , and Diego Boneta . THR is reporting after waving hasta la vista, baby, more than 25 years ago, Linda Hamilton is returning to the world of Terminator, reuniting with James Cameron, the creator of the sci-fi franchise, for the new installment being made by Skydance and Paramount. Cameron made the announcement at a private event celebrating the storied franchise, saying, "As meaningful as she was to gender and action stars everywhere back then, it’s going to make a huge statement to have that seasoned warrior that she’s become return." With Hamilton’s return, Cameron hopes to once again make a statement on gender roles in action movies. Just because Arnold Schwarzenegger has purportedly bid adieu to the legendary franchise doesn’t necessarily mean The Terminator is dead – far from it, in fact, with Skydance head honcho David Ellison revealing to Collider that the series has “an incredibly bright future.” Not only that, but Ellison went on to tease a major franchise announcement for 2017, indicating that James Cameron and Tim Miller’s nebulous reboot may well be further along than many had anticipated. That’s merely conjecture for now, though, considering that we only learned of said revival two months ago. After the disappointing box office results for Terminator Genisys last year, there was a lot of talk of recalibrating the attempted new trilogy. Now it appears Paramount is ready to put the brakes on even harder, removing the planned second film from its release schedule. The next Terminator film, which didn't have a confirmed cast, director or writers, but had been hoping to kick off shooting this year, had been sitting on the company's schedule in the prime early summer slot of May 19, 2017. Hopes had been high that Genisys would launch a revived Terminator franchise, but the critical reaction and the low turnout ($89 million in the US, with a slightly healthier worldwide response thanks partly to China) didn't instill confidence. Remember when the 21st century seemed like an eternity away? In the latter half of the last century, Hollywood got pretty imaginative guessing what awaited us in the near-future, with ray guns or hoverboards or some other gadget that is still, in 2014, years or decades away from even having the chance of becoming commonplace. Some of these films, like 1989's " Back to the Future Part II " (which depicted flying cars as a popular form of transportation in the year 2015) took an optimistic approach, while others (take 1982's grim " Blade Runner ") held a more dystopian view -- as was certainly the case with one of the most ground-breaking sci-fi films of that era, 1984's " The Terminator ." Things are starting to move on The Terminator franchise, but a plan by rights owner Megan Ellison and Arnold Schwarzenegger to put the first of two pictures in production for the fourth quarter of 2012 has forced director Justin Lin to drop out. But borrowing the film’s signature phrase “ I’ll be back ,” Lin has left the door open to a return if Ellison and Schwarzenegger will wait until he completes the sixth installment of The Fast and the Furious franchise. The Terminator franchise has been under the radar since Ellison’s Annapurna Films spent over $20 million to buy film rights during the Cannes Film Festival, with Lin and Schwarzenegger attached. He's back. Arnold Schwarzenegger is attached to star in a rights package that CAA is shopping today that will revive The Terminator , one of Hollywood's most iconic science fiction franchises. The agency is dropping the package on studios this afternoon. There is no screenwriter attached at this point, and Robert Cort is producing. This is the first real activity on The Terminator project since February 2010, when the property emerged from a bankruptcy auction and into the possession of Pacificor. The Santa Barbara-based hedge fund posted a bid of $29.5 million, with the promise that additional multimillion-dollar payments for each film would go to Halcyon, the company that made the 2009 McG-directed Terminator Salvation . I’m told that interest is kicking back up. One interested party: Universal , which is looking for a directing vehicle for Justin Lin . He helmed the last three installments of The Fast and the Furious franchise , including the latest Fast Five , which Universal releases April 29. I’ve heard that the plan would be to possibly pair him with Chris Morgan, who aside from Fast Five has credits on big scale Universal films that include the upcoming Keanu Reeves actioner 47 Ronin and Wanted . Now I enjoyed the Fast and Furious films for what they were, but Lin helming a Terminator film doesn't give me much faith in the movie.
