It was a bad weekend at the American box office for the Farrelly brothers , Nicolas Cage or indeed anyone who likes to see films perform well. The brothers had a better time than most, though their latest comedy, Hall Pass could only place second on its launch weekend. And to rub salt into the wound, the winner was Gnomeo and Juliet , which surprised everyone by leaping back up from third place to first in its third weekend in release with $14.2 million. Hall Pass, meanwhile, took in $13.4 million. Last week’s champ, Unknown , slipped down to third with $12.4 million, while the Adam Sandler comedy Just Go With It clung to fourth place, making $11.1 million. I Am Number Four doesn’t look like it’ll have the strongest legs, as it fell to fifth place with $11 million and a total take of $37.7 million after just two weeks in US cinemas. Justin Bieber: Never Say Never, meanwhile, held on to sixth with $9.2 million, holding off The King’s Speech , which nonetheless itself stayed in

They don't exactly carry the cache of the Oscars, but the 68th annual Golden Globe Awards were handed out last night in America, and there were good results for several films, including The Social Network (which took the drama screenplay, score, director and film awards) and The King’s Speech (a somewhat unsurprising drama actor win for Colin Firth). Ricky Gervais was the host for the evening, his second stint behind the podium for the Globes, and he started as he meant to go on, launching a torrent of gags about Charlie Sheen, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s recent financial scandals and various subjects that had the crowd alternately chuckling and jeering. Not sure if he’ll be invited back next year, but at least he made a stab at getting beyond the usual bland backslapping. And let’s face it – when you hire Gervais for a second time, and allow him to drink again, what do you really expect? But back to the awards themselves - it was a good night for The Kids Are
