The Jungle Book is currently the #4 film of the year domestically, internationally, and globally and joins Zootopia to become Disney’s second 2016 release to cross the $700M threshold. Having surpassed the $600M mark on April 29, The Jungle Book added more than $100M to its global total last weekend thanks to outstanding holds in the U.S. and internationally. Domestically, it has remained the #1 film every day of its run and, in its third consecutive #1 weekend (April 29-May 1), posted the sixth-best third weekend of all time with $43.7M. Variety is reporting Disney has been staking out several years worth of live action fairy tales. In grabbing the release dates, Disney gave a peak at its development pipeline. Disney's crusade to turn its animated properties into live-action movies has largely been a successful one, and that continues with Jon Favreau's new version of The Jungle Book , which has opened to $103.5 million in the States, according to studio estimates. That's a healthy start for the film, which carried a reported $175 million production budget and cost a fair chunk on top of that to market. But with overseas openings also showing strong returns, the movie is already past $290 million worldwide. Audiences seem to be embracing the immersive CG aesthetic, which uses digital technology to conjure everything but Neel Sethi's Mowgli and one or two tiny chunks of the jungle.
