#BoxOffice Report: August 2015 Sets New Highs for Lows

The worst August in 21 years is fortunately put out of its misery. Story by Matt Cummings 2015 might become the biggest box office draw ever, but August will go down as one of the all-time worst. Theater owners saw empty lines for popcorn and even more depressing receipts last month, as the industry experienced a perfect storm of unprecedented flops, poorly-timed releases, and a lackluster set of films that kept audiences away in droves. The problem actually began in July, which included the under-appreciated ( Southpaw and Self/Less ), the dull ( Paper Towns ), and the just plain awful ( Vacation ). This set the stage for three nearly-instant August duds, The Fantastic Four , Ricki and the Flash , and The Man from UNCLE , before delving into two of the worst weekends of the year. In fact, August 2015 has achieved a set of records that theater owners and Hollywood fat cats would just as soon forget. Here are just a few: August 2015 was the worst since August 1994...

#BoxOffice Report: #StraightOuttaCompton Raps Its Way to The Top

The NWA biopic registers the fourth largest August bow while Man From U.N.C.L.E. gets taken out. Story by Matt Cummings Straight Outta Compton delivered solid box office numbers over the weekend, crushing its competition with $60.2m. Led by strong word of mouth and solid reviews, the biopic about rap group NWA including a very strong $24.12m Friday on its way to the fourth largest opening for an August film. These numbers are all the more impressive when you consider it did not play either in 3D or at any IMAX - that privilege went to The Man From U.N.C.L.E. Although its 'A' rating from CinemaScore and impressive 96% audience score from Flixster should bode well for its immediate future, the film will most likely endure for another reason: the lack of strong candidates remaining for the month. Under those conditions, we think this and at least one other film on our list should do well as the summer winds down. With a modest drop of 40%, the Tom Cruise spy ...

What's Next for The 'Fantastic Four' Franchise?

We look at the options available to Fox as the studio circles the wagons. Story by Matt Cummings It's clear that 20th Century Fox's Fantastic Four is a bomb of epic proportions, led by a series of creative disasters and poor decision-making that turned into the worst-reviewed comic book movie ever. Its second-place box office debut this weekend sends a stunning message: not all superhero movies are alike, and no comic book franchise can simply throw together a Frankenstein-ed plot, fill it with substandard acting, and then take away the director's creative control and still expect audiences to attend. This sort of Box Office Roulette does have an end game, as Fox now circles the wagons in a desperate attempt to figure out what's next, going so far as to hand out surveys to those few who've seen it, hoping to glean some insight. What options do they have? SJF weighs several possibilities. Give/Sell Fantastic Four Back to Marvel Possible? Yes. ...

#BoxOffice Report: #MissionImpossible Tops Bad #FantasticFour

The Fantastic Four utterly fails as Ethan Hunt triumphs again. Story by Matt Cummings In a devastating blow to one of 20th Century Fox's tentpoles, The Fantastic Four drew one of the lowest opening box office tallies for a super hero film, bringing in just $26.2 million from 3,995 US theaters. That's after receiving a crushing 8% from Rotten Tomatoes critics and a tidal wave of poor audience feedback including a 'C-' from CinemaScore. Perhaps what's more surprising is that the Tom Cruise spy action/thriller Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation easily won the weekend box office with an estimated $29.4 million from 3,988 theaters. That down just 48% from its opening, bringing its 10-day total to $109.5m. We were estimating a much closer race, and perhaps even a defeat for Ethan Hunt and his IMF team. There's little doubt that Josh Trank's film was torpedoed both internally and externally, capping off with a Tweet on Thursday by the directo...

Movie Review: #TheFantasticFour

After a promising start, The Fantastic Four descends into the rumored trainwreck. Review by Matt Cummings If the recent history of comic book movies has been one of glory, that success was built upon a myriad of high profile failures, none more so than first two Fantastic Four films, which premiered in 2005 and 2007. For fans hungry to forget those disasters, the newest incarnation will do nothing to fulfill that desire. Not a total embarrassment but far from a success, The Fantastic Four is the trainwreck we all feared. When the brilliant scientist Reed Richards (Miles Teller) and his childhood friend Ben Grimm (Jamie Bell) concoct a rudimentary dimensional transportation device, Reed is recruited by the Baxter Institute to complete their parallel research. Along the way, he enlists the help of the tempestuous engineer Johnny Storm (Michael B Jordan), his adopted genius sister Sue (Kate Mara), and the troubled Victor Von Doom (Tony Kebbell), who harbors a secret des...

Here are two leaked photos from the set ‘ Fantastic Four ’. The photos feature Doctor Doom . Can anyone guess what is in the top right corner of the second picture? Human Torch? Josh Trank is directing the movie, which once again focuses on the Marvel Comics quartet of scientist-adventurers Reed Richards ( Miles Teller ), aka Mr. Fantastic; his best friend Ben Grimm ( Jamie Bell ), aka The Thing; his girlfriend Sue Storm ( Kate Mara ), aka The Invisible Woman; and her brother, Johnny ( Michael B. Jordan ), aka The Human Torch. Please Leave A Comment-

Tim Blake Nelson Set To Star In The Fantastic Four

Tim Blake Nelson is in final negotiations to join the cast of 20th Century Fox’s reboot of The Fantastic Four . Toby Kebbell is playing the villain, Doctor Doom. Nelson will play Harvey Elder, an eccentric and socially awkward scientist. In comics lore, Elder is actually the Mole Man , shunned by humanity and leader of a subterranean group of monsters known as the Moloids. Sources say the Mole Man will not appear in this movie but Elder’s appearance does set up the character to be the villain in future installments of the franchise. Fox did not comment on the plans. Simon Kinberg wrote the script and is producing with Hu...

Marvel Sues To Keep Rights To Super Heroes

Marvel Sues To Keep Rights To Super Heroes Marvel is suing to keep the rights to superheroes including Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four and X-Men. The federal lawsuit filed Friday in Manhattan asks a judge to invalidate notices sent by the heirs of artist Jack Kirby to try to terminate Marvel's copyrights. The heirs sent notified several companies last year that the rights to the characters would revert from Marvel to Kirby's estate. The lawsuit says Kirby's work on the comics were "for hire" and render the heirs' claims invalid. Comic book characters such as Spider-Man and the X-Men have become some of Hollywood's most bankable properties in recent years. Marc Toberoff, an attorney for the Kirby heirs, said he hadn't seen the lawsuit and had no immediate comment. Please Leave A Comment- Source- THR

Jack Kirby Estate Going To Court

Jack Kirby Estate Trying To Regain His Share Of Copyright The estate of Jack Kirby , co-creator of Captain America, The Fantastic Four, The X-Men, The Avengers, Iron Man, Hulk, The Silver Surfer and Thor and has sent notices terminating copyright to publishers Marvel and Disney, as well as film studios that have made movies and TV shows based on characters he created or co-created, including Sony, Universal, 20th Century Fox and Paramount Pictures. Just as the Jerry Siegel estate has done so with rights to Superman, so Kirby's estate is looking to regain his share of copyright in the characters and their use in comics and other media. the estate is using the same lawyers as the Siegels, Toberoff & Associates, who have been fairly successful in their case against DC/Warner so far. Such claims, if found valid, would begin from 2014 and, as always, its worth noting that Marvel/Disney will still own the trademarks of the characters in comics, and the studios in movies. The likelih...
