After the disappointment of The Dark Tower , there must have been concern about the potential performance of It . Turns out, no one needed to worry – the new Stephen King horror adaptation has smashed records with a hugely successful $117 million opening at the US box office, according to studio estimates. It nabbed the largest September opening, largest autumn opening, and the largest opening for a horror movie of any rating. Clearly Pennywise the terrifying clown touched a few nerves while scaring up plenty of business. The follow-up, which will catch up with the Losers' Club kids from the movie as adults, is already in the works and there's clearly some anticipation for it now. And the film also did well overseas, taking in $62 million for a $179.1 million global opening. There was a big gap between the horror and its comrade in new arrival status, but programming a Reese Witherspoon comedy – which itself has enjoyed good reviews – against It has panned out. It was a slooooow weekend at the US box office, with little in the way of truly notable wide releases. Which might go some way to explaining why The Hitman's Bodyguard stayed top of the charts. The Ryan Reynolds/Samuel L. Jackson action caper added $10 million, according to studio estimates. That means the film has thus far earned $39.6 million in the States, and clung to its place for a second week. Annabelle: Creation also stayed where it was in second, bringing in $7.3 million. The first of this week's main new arrivals was animated ballet pic Leap! , which landed third on $5 million. It beat Wind River , which increased its screen count and jumped up the top 10 to fourth with $4.4 million. Rounding out the top five we find Logan Lucky , down from third with $4.3 million. The all-too-familiarity of The Hitman's Bodyguard still makes for an enjoyable time. Review by Matt Cummings If the old adage can be believed that some old movies need a newer version to rekindle interest in the genre, then The Hitman's Bodyguard might be the best example we've seen this year. And though it feels exactly like its predecessors, the film entertains with a way over-qualified cast that oozes comedic gems and sports great action, ready (but not quite qualified) to join the pantheon of buddy-cop comedies.
