Variety is reporting Ava DuVernay is stepping into the superhero universe. The filmmaker has come on board to direct “ New Gods ” at Warner Bros. as part of the studio’s DC Extended Universe. “ New Gods ,” based on the DC Comics series of the same name, is aimed at creating a new universe of properties for the studio. Created and designed by Jack Kirby, the comic was first released in 1971. The movie marks the second major superhero tentpole directed by a woman, following another DC property: Patty Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman.” DuVernay directed Disney’s “ A Wrinkle in Time ,” becoming the first woman of color in Hollywood to helm a live-action film with a production budget of $100 million. The time-travel fantasy has grossed $42.2 million in its first six days in North America. The New Gods are natives of the twin planets of New Genesis and Apokolips. January has usually been the month where films go to die, cast off to the Island of Misfit Toys after entertaining earlier Oct-Dec releases. The reality: most of these will flop, some will linger around like Jay and Silent Bob, while others will make a profit and actually lead in the box office until around March. This year might be a different story, with one of the most anticipated slate of films in recent memory. For now. we're holding to our theory but for now there are a few that could be interesting. The final push in 2014 for Oscars nominations and our hard-earned dollars is upon us - welcome to our December On the Radar Preview! November 2014 was filled with tasty movie goodness, offering solid Oscar candidates with a collection of enjoyable animated fare. From Penguins of Madagascar to Big Hero 6 , November began and ended with some of the best the genre had to offer. Even the live-action sequel The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1 delivered on many levels. The only stinker was the disappointing Dumb and Dumber To (but don't tell our writer Brandon Wolfe we said that). But now, it's on to December and the final push towards Oscar season, with Hollywood not sure if they'll beat 2013, but happily relieved that Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain America: The Winter Solider saved them from a potentially disastrous year. But unlike previous months - especially August and September - our worry this month lies in the sheer number of quality releases:

Robert De Niro To Take On George Wallace And Midnight Run 2 Buried in a Deadline Hollywood story about Robert De Niro's representation (he's just moved from the William Morris Agency back to his old home at Creative Artists) are some snippets about his upcoming roles. Frustratingly there are no details, other than the brief, tantalising mention that it's in "mid development", about a new Midnight Run, but the prospect of De Niro returning to Jack Walsh, one of his funniest screen creations, is a doozy. Paul Weitz' Another Night in Suck City, co-starring Casey Affleck, is based on a memoir by Nick Flynn (Another Bullshit Night in Suck City) at the centre of which is a fractured father/son relationship. De Niro as Affleck's father? And Selma, by Precious director Lee Daniels, will see De Niro take on the mantle of George Wallace.
