BOB MARLEY: ONE LOVE Featurette

O'Shea Jackson Jr. Will Play Dock Ellis

He's following up the true-life tale (of his father) Straight Outta Compton with the more fantastical Godzilla: King Of The Monsters . But for another new movie, O'Shea Jackson Jr. is headed back to reality, playing infamous baseball pitcher Dock Ellis . Dock, as the film is currently titled, has a script by Joseph Poach, and tells the colourful story of Ellis, known for his loud mouth, chaotic style and quick wit when calling out double standards and the racism of Major League Baseball at a time (the 1960s and 70s) when it was still casually deployed. Ellis played for the Pittsburgh Pirates, New York Yankees, Oakland Athletics, Texas Rangers, and New York Mets, but was perhaps best known for pitching a no-hitter while, he claimed, high on LSD. He later said that he always pitched while on some sort of drug, and after his retirement, he got sober and counseled addicts going through treatment centres and prisons. He died in 2008 at the age of 63. "Joey Poach’s scri...

Corey Hawkins To Star In #24Legacy

EW is reporting the reboot of the iconic action series has cast Straight Outta Compton breakout Corey Hawkins in the leading role. Taking over for previous series star Kiefer Sutherland , Hawkins will play an entirely new character named Eric Carter in 24: Legacy . “Strong and smart, Eric came from a very rough background and turned his life around in the Army Rangers,” reads the official description. “Now back home in Virginia with his wife Nicole, he’s pulled back into action as his past comes looking for him.” Carter will join forces with the Counter Terrorist Unit to try and prevent an attack on American soil. None of the original 24 cast is expected to appear in the new version, which Fox ordered to pilot earlier this month. Unlike the first version of the series, where Jack Bauer (Sutherland) was basically a lone wolf protagonist for nine seasons, the new 24 also features a female co-lead role (not yet cast). If given a series order, 24: Legacy will also play looser wit...

#PacificRim2 May Not Happen Now

According to THR  Legendary wanted to produce a sequel to del Toro's  Pacific Rim , which was made under the Warners deal and turned into one of those films that grosses a lot ($411 million worldwide) while being so costly that a follow-up isn't a sure thing. Sources say Legendary liked that the original performed exceptionally well in China, where the company is heavily invested, but for now the project — which had been ramping up to make a release date in August 2017 — has been halted indefinitely and will be pushed back (if it gets made at all). Universal Pictures' decision last week to let Thomas Tull's Legendary Pictures take its Kong: Skull Island project to Warner Bros. in the midst of a five-year production and financing deal is being read as a symptom of relationship trouble between the companies. Several sources say there has been strain, in part because Tull kicked off the deal in 2014 with a couple of clunkers that he put through Universal's dist...

The Perfect Guy Tops This Weekends Box Office

It was a close run thing this weekend between two new films tempting American cinemagoers. But when the dust settled, Sony’s Screen Gems arm claimed victory with The Perfect Guy arriving top of the charts with $26.7 million, according to studio estimates. The stalker thriller stars Sanaa Lathan, Michael Ealy and Morris Chestnut in the tale of a woman who breaks up with her boyfriend and starts dating a charming new guy, only for him to turn out as… Well, you can probably figure that out. With a relatively low $12 million budget , the film is already earning money, and is a big success for the three leads. But if you’re talking budget-to-earning power, M. Night Shyamalan’s The Visit has the edge, since it was produced by the Blumhouse team for Universal and kept to an even tighter $5 million . The horror thriller’s blend of scares and laughs took in $25.6 million and marks a significant success for a writer/director who has had a bad run in recent years. Last week’s unexpected...

#BoxOffice Report: 'Transporter' Struggles, 'War Room' Excels...Sort Of

The big news about this weekend's lackluster box office isn't what you think. Story by Matt Cummings August 2015 broke all kinds of box office records, none of which to hang your hat on. September is off to just as bad a start, with a collection of new releases that just aren't bringing in the crowds. Suffering might be good for the soul, but this is ridiculous. Coming in at No. 1 was the faith-based War Room with $12.55m, which represents a slight 18% drop in its second week. The Sony film benefited from strong word of mouth and an expansion of theaters (391). Its 27.86m total haul over 11 days is guaranteed to further unleash more of the low-budget God films, but look for smart placement in the schedule to be a deciding factor of each success. Falling to No. 2 was Straight Outta Compton with an estimated four-day haul of $11.06m. Having owned the past three weekends, the F. Gary Gray N.W.A biopic fell only 16% and actually trailed War Room by a s...

#BoxOffice Report: August 2015 Sets New Highs for Lows

The worst August in 21 years is fortunately put out of its misery. Story by Matt Cummings 2015 might become the biggest box office draw ever, but August will go down as one of the all-time worst. Theater owners saw empty lines for popcorn and even more depressing receipts last month, as the industry experienced a perfect storm of unprecedented flops, poorly-timed releases, and a lackluster set of films that kept audiences away in droves. The problem actually began in July, which included the under-appreciated ( Southpaw and Self/Less ), the dull ( Paper Towns ), and the just plain awful ( Vacation ). This set the stage for three nearly-instant August duds, The Fantastic Four , Ricki and the Flash , and The Man from UNCLE , before delving into two of the worst weekends of the year. In fact, August 2015 has achieved a set of records that theater owners and Hollywood fat cats would just as soon forget. Here are just a few: August 2015 was the worst since August 1994...

Jason Mitchell & Corey Hawkins Join Kong: Skull Island

THR is reporting Jason Mitchell , the young actor making a breakout with his portrayal of rapper Eazy-E in Straight Outta Compton , is in negotiations to join the cast of Legendary’s Kong: Skull Island . The move will reunite him with Corey Hawkins , his Compton co-star (he played Dr. Dre) who is already cast in the monster movie. Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson and Toby Kebbell are also already on the manifest of the ship that takes a crew of explorers to the mysterious, creature-laden isle that is also the home of Kong, the king of the apes. Insiders say that Mitchell will play an easy going pilot. Jordan Vogt-Roberts is directing the big-budget project, which last week brought on screenwriter Derek Connolly for rewrites as it heads toward a late-October production start in Hawaii. Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni are producing with Mary Parent. The movie is scheduled for a March 10, 2017, release. Mitchell is currently shooting Keanu, the New Line comedy from Keega...

#BoxOffice Report: #StraightOuttaCompton Raps Its Way to The Top

The NWA biopic registers the fourth largest August bow while Man From U.N.C.L.E. gets taken out. Story by Matt Cummings Straight Outta Compton delivered solid box office numbers over the weekend, crushing its competition with $60.2m. Led by strong word of mouth and solid reviews, the biopic about rap group NWA including a very strong $24.12m Friday on its way to the fourth largest opening for an August film. These numbers are all the more impressive when you consider it did not play either in 3D or at any IMAX - that privilege went to The Man From U.N.C.L.E. Although its 'A' rating from CinemaScore and impressive 96% audience score from Flixster should bode well for its immediate future, the film will most likely endure for another reason: the lack of strong candidates remaining for the month. Under those conditions, we think this and at least one other film on our list should do well as the summer winds down. With a modest drop of 40%, the Tom Cruise spy ...

#StraightOuttaCompton Opens Huge

Universal revised its opening figure up as the musical biopic grabbed a big slice of the audience. Turns out that Straight Outta Compton did even better at the North American box office this weekend than Universal originally estimated. While the studio predicted a weekend box office of $56.1 million on Sunday morning, on Monday it revised that number to a whopping $60.2 million. The film opened to $24.1 million on Friday, including its Thursday night screenings; it corralled $19.3 million on Saturday and took in an extra $16.8 million on Sunday. The film now stands as the fifth best August opening ever, narrowly surpassing M. Night Shyamalan’s Signs, which opened to $60.1 million in 2002. Universal’s R-rated Compton, the biopic about the groundbreaking hip-hop group N.W.A, produced for just $29 million, posted a best-ever opening for its director F. Gary Gray. It also overshadowed other rap movies like Eminem’s 8 Mile, which bowed to $51.2 million in 2002 and Notorious, the ...

Movie Review: Straight Outta Compton

N.W.A film is entertaining but still straight outta the biopic playbook. Review by Brandon Wolfe Partway through Straight Outta Compton , the biopic of hip-hop/gangsta rap pioneers N.W.A, the group is about to play a packed-house show in Detroit. Members of the Detroit Police Department have instructed the group of a laundry list of things they are forbidden to do during the show, the biggest of which is that they are not allowed to perform their hit song “F*ck Tha Police” under penalty of arrest. Taking to the stage, the group appears for a time to abide by the edict, but ultimately refuses to kowtow to authority and defiantly belts out the song. When the police attempt to shut them down, a riot begins to break out and the group is cuffed and tossed into a police van as the crowd turns on the arresting officers. Piled on top of each other in the van, the group begins laughing triumphantly, attempting to high-five as best they can with their hands bound behind them. It was totally w...

Scarface Remake Is Moving Forward

Say hello to my little friend — again. According to THR , Universal is moving forward with its Scarface remake and has tapped Straight Outta Compton writer Jonathan Herman to do the rewrite. Paul Attanasio and David Ayer wrote previous drafts of the film, which will be a new and original take on the immigrant story, which spawned films in 1932 and 1983. The 1983 version, which was released by Universal, tells the story of Cuban refugee Tony Montana ( Al Pacino ) who arrives in 1980s Miami with nothing and rises up to become a powerful drug kingpin. That film made the expression, "Say hello to my little friend," one of the most iconic lines in cinema. The new film will be set in Los Angeles and explore an immigrant's rise in the criminal underworld. Herman has become a go-to writer at Universal, having penned the Straight Outta Compton draft that received the green light from the studio. He is currently in development on The Demonologist and The Birds remake at ...

N.W.A Biopic To Be Made "Straight Outta Compton"

N.W.A Biopic To Be Made "Straight Outta Compton" Rap is finally getting the Ray treatment. New Line is developing Straight Outta Compton, an urban drama about N.W.A. (a.k.a. Niggaz With Attitude), the hip hop group that helped pioneer the gangsta rap movement in the ’80s and early ’90s. The project will chronicle the rise and fall of the rap quartet, founded by Eazy-E, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, and MC Ren, whose songs were so incendiary (i.e. "F— tha Police") they were banned from radio playlists but still sold millions of albums. Then came the inevitable fiery breakup, a grudge match between the former bandmates, and Eazy-E’s tragic death due to AIDS. The film’s producers, which include Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, and Tomica Wright (Eazy-E’s widow), and Circle of Confusion entertainment, are now actively searching for a director along the lines of Curtis Hanson (8 Mile).
