Movie Review: 'Mr. Holmes'

Ian McKellen is terrific as the aging sleuth, but is it worth your time? Review by Matt Cummings With so much Sherlock Holmes in our lives today, the central question behind Sir Ian McKellen's latest Mr. Holmes is this: do audiences want to see a Sherlock Holmes near the end of his life? While that answer will play out in the theaters, its slow burn and story holes might ultimately keep people away that were expecting the Robert Downey Jr version. Thirty years after retiring from solving crimes, the 93-year-old Sherlock Holmes (McKellen) has left urban London to settle at the seaside Kent. And was directed by  Stephen Frears  ( High Fidelity,The Queen ) The screenplay was written by Moira Buffini, based on the newspaper comic strip of the same name (which was then re-published as a graphic novel) written by Posy Simmonds. The comic strip which serves as source material was a modern reworking of Thomas Hardy's nineteenth century novel Far from the Madding Crowd. When Tamara Drewe returns to the rustic village of her youth transformed by a glamorous new career as a columnist – and a dazzling new nose – she captures the imaginations of all of the men in town.
