Deadline reports Will Smith is in talks to take on the genie role made famous by the late Robin Williams in Disney’s live-action Aladdin from Guy Ritchie , we hear. The adaptation of the animated feature follows the studio’s strategy of bringing its classic animated titles to life and so far it has been a goldmine, most recently with Beauty and the Beast which has already grossed over $1B worldwide. Smith had previously been in talks with Tim Burton about Dumbo but that did not materialize and we’re told these talks are also early. Like Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin will be a live-action musical and that would fit well with Smith who is not only an actor but was known to the world for his musical prowess as The Fresh Prince rapper before he hit the little or big screen. The production is gearing up for a long, six-month shoot, so that is one consideration. It is supposed to start in the U.K. in July and wrap early next year. Variety is reporting Sony is getting closer to rebooting a Robin Williams classic with two of the busiest actors in town. Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart are in early talks to star in Sony’s “ Jumanji ,” a new adaptation of Chris Van Allsburg’s original 1981 adventure book. Schedules are still being worked out, as both Johnson and Hart have heavy production loads ahead, but insiders say things are moving toward a deal. Johnson has an opening this fall with his New Line pic “Rampage” possibly shifting to 2017. The plan would be to shoot “Jumanji” before the third season of his HBO series “Ballers.” Johnson will also shoot “Fast 8” this summer, reprising his role of Agent Hobbs. Hart is expected to shoot “The Intouchables” remake for Weinstein this summer opposite Bryan Cranston, and according to sources, working out this part of the schedule could prove difficult. Robin Williams passed away today at the age of 63, of an apparent suicide by asphyxia. And as I write out these words, I still don’t believe them. Robin Williams is one of those guys you can’t imagine the world no longer containing. He’s been a fixture, a familiar and welcoming presence, for as long as I, and I suspect the majority of people out there, can remember. Saying that Robin Williams no longer exists is like saying ice cream or kittens no longer exist. It sounds impossible and absurd. Williams is, of course, famous for being a funnyman and he most certainly was one funny man. With his manic voices and impressions erupting out of him one on top of the other like a Roman candle of silliness, Robin Williams was less a comedian than an indefatigable comedic force of nature.
