Second season forced to embrace originality. Review by Brandon Wolfe The first season of From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series was an exercise in sustained pointlessness. The series, Robert Rodriguez’s adaptation of his own 1996 film, saw fit to take a quick and dirty story and build it out laboriously, to the extent where scenes that once lasted a scant few minutes of screentime now made up a full hour of television. Grafting fat onto a formerly lean framework predictably didn’t do the narrative any favors, nor did the fact that the writing for the series wasn’t merely a step down from Quentin Tarantino’s script for the film so much as a freefall from the upper atmosphere. The series also suffered from an inferior cast, the only highlights of which were Robert Patrick, inheriting Harvey Keitel’s role as Jacob Fuller, and DJ Cotrona, who clearly studied the nuances of George Clooney’s performance as antihero Seth Gecko. Robert Rodriguez has come aboard the adventure project, an adaptation of the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon, which has been dormant for the past several years. Moving the Warner Bros. adventure along is Terry Rossio, whose credits range from the Pirates of the Caribbean movies to The Mask of Zorro. Rodriguez and Rossio are rewriting the script initially penned by Dan Mazeau, with Rodriguez on board to direct. Dan Lin and Adrian Askarieh are producing. Quest was a 1964 ABC primetime cartoon that chronicles the neato adventures of Quest, a boy who accompanies his father on globe-spanning missions. Rounding out the team are Hadji, a Kolkatan orphan and Jonny's best friend; his pet bulldog, Bandit; and government agent/bodyguard Race Bannon. Sony Pictures has acquired a big package that gives the studio a potential franchise. Robert Rodriguez will direct a live-action version of the 1983 animated film Fire And Ice . The film is Rodriguez’s homage to his friend, the late legendary animator Frank Frazetta, on whose works Frazetta and Ralph Bakshi based that original film. It’s a big buy for Sony Pictures at a rough time for that studio, and a deal that reunites it with Rodriguez; Columbia Pictures acquired the Sundance breakout El Mariachi, Rodriguez’s memorable debut. Sin City: A Dame to Kill For knows what it wants, but utterly misses in its execution. The folly of returning to an old franchise nearly 10 years after it was made has proven to be difficult at best and disastrous at worst.
