Please be the last Ride. Review by Brandon Wolfe Kevin Hart is a funny man. I don’t think many outside of his most strident detractors would hesitate to concede that point. What might get called into question is whether or not his particular brand of funny warrants headlining entire films. Hart can be a bit much when given center stage, his shrill, hyperkinetic energy perhaps better suited for supporting roles. Put another way, when placing him into the context of an action-comedy, he might perhaps function best as second-banana comic relief. Think Joe Pesci in the Lethal Weapon series. That would be a good fit for him, accentuating rather than saturating. Yet Hart is, of course, the main attraction in Ride Along 2 (the Mel Gibson, if you will), and he does tend to wear one down at length. Jamie Foxx and Kevin Hart are in talks to star in Screen Gems’ “ Black Phantom ,” with “Ride Along” helmer Tim Story in discussions to direct. If a deal makes, the film would reteam Hart and Story with their “ Ride Along ” producer Will Packer, who is producing the pic along with Will Gluck. Packer has long wanted to do the film and, after the success of “Ride Along” and Foxx’s interest to work with Hart, the project seemed like the perfect match for all four men. Story follows a double-crossed mob hitman who enlists the help of the Black Phantom , the same African-American hitman who had been sent to kill him. Dave Lease and Megan Hinds penned the original spec. Screen Gems president Clint Culpepper will oversee the project for the studio. Foxx has been a favorite of Sony’s for some time, with “The Amazing Spider-Man 2″ and the “Annie” reboot bowing this year. Ice Cube's "Ride Along" Gets A Rewrite Jason Mantzoukas has been hired to rewrite the action-comedy feature "Ride Along," starring Ice Cube. The Fox project, from 20th TV and Chernin Entertainment, takes place in a hospital and centers on a female doctor who is unraveling at the seams. "Ride Along," from New Line and Cube Vision, will star Cube as a rogue cop who tries to break off his sister's engagement to an upper-crust white psychiatrist by inviting his future brother-in-law on a ride-along. The project, penned by Greg Coolidge, has gone through a couple of rewrites. Cube and his producing partner Matt Alvarez are producing, with Chris Bender and JC Spink executive producing.
