Game of Thrones David Benioff & D.B. Weiss To Write & Produce A New Series Of Star Wars Films

David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are going from Winterfell to a galaxy far, far away. It was announced today that Benioff and Weiss, creators of the smash-hit, Emmy Award-winning television series Game of Thrones , will write and produce a new series of Star Wars films. These new films will be separate from both the episodic Skywalker saga and the recently-announced trilogy being developed by Rian Johnson , writer-director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. “David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.” “In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since,” Benioff and Weiss said in a joint statement. “We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as ...

Rian Johnson To Create A Brand-New Star Wars Trilogy

For director Rian Johnson , Star Wars: The Last Jedi was just the beginning of his journey in a galaxy far, far away. Lucasfilm is excited to announce that Johnson will create a brand-new Star Wars trilogy, the first of which he is also set to write and direct, with longtime collaborator Ram Bergman onboard to produce. As writer-director of The Last Jedi, Johnson conceived and realized a powerful film of which Lucasfilm and Disney are immensely proud. In shepherding this new trilogy, which is separate from the episodic Skywalker saga, Johnson will introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored. “We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.” “We had the time of our lives collaborating ...

Kelly Marie Tran's 'Rose' From Star Wars: The Last Jedi

She's described as something of an everywoman, one who works in maintenance for the Resistance, but who will come to play a much bigger role than she suspects. "This possibility that any of us could step up and become a hero, that’s where Rose comes from," Last Jedi director Rian Johnson told the crowd at Star Wars Celebration. "She’s not a soldier, she’s not looking to be a hero. But she gets pulled into a very big adventure with Finn." Given their shared background in less-than-thrilling heroics earlier in their lives (Finn, don't forget, was a low-ranking Storm Trooper in the First Order), you can see why they might get on. This looks set to launch Tran into the sort of sudden fame experienced by Ridley and Boyega, and before them, the likes of Mark Hamill. She's taken her first step into a larger world... New Image From Star Wars: Episode VIII

Is this what Jedi will be wearing in December 2017? Or could it be, as the director himself has jokingly suggested, the cloak that Rian Johnson has been sporting as he oversees Star Wars: Episode VIII . Either way, it's the latest image that Johnson has posted to his Tumblr page from the movie's production. Johnson is getting close to winding up at least principal photography on the follow-up to The Force Awakens, though of course the long haul of post-production, any potential additional shooting and then the press march for the film means that he's got a lot of work still ahead of him. And a lot about the next main Star Wars entry remains to be disclosed: despite recent rumours, the title of the film is still a mystery and we don't know much about what actually happens in the film, beyond, one can assume, more from Mark Hamill's Luke Skywalker, Daisy Ridley's Rey, John Boyega's Finn and Adam Driver's Kylo Ren. The resistance will have more tro...

Star Wars: Episode VIII , originally scheduled for release on May 26, 2017, will now debut on December 15, 2017. The move follows the extraordinary success of Star Wars: The Force Awakens , which was the first Star Wars movie to premiere in December. In the popular holiday moviegoing corridor, it smashed numerous records, including biggest domestic and global debuts of all time as well as the biggest domestic second and third weekends, en route to becoming the highest grossing domestic release of all time with over $861M and the third biggest global release ever with $1.887B. Written and directed by Rian Johnson, Star Wars: Episode VIII is currently in pre-production and will begin principal photography in London next month. Star Wars: Episode VIII Female Casting Underway

Rian Johnson is directing the sci-fi sequel, which Disney and Lucasfilm will release on May 26, 2017 Golden Globe winner Gina Rodriguez (“Jane the Virgin”), Golden Globe nominee Tatiana Maslany (“Orphan Black”) and “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl” star Olivia Cooke are considered the top contenders for the new female lead in Rian Johnson‘s “ Star Wars: Episode VIII ,” multiple individuals familiar with the casting situation told TheWrap . Insiders insist it’s early in the casting process and that Johnson is still auditioning actresses, with several rising stars yet to read for him. Others suggest that Johnson is narrowing down the field and that Rodriguez, Maslany and Cooke will be among a group of girls slated to chemistry-read with “The Force Awakens” star John Boyega before the end of the month. A representative for Disney declined to comment. The studio will release the sci-fi sequel on May 26, 2017. Ram Bergman is producing the film with Lucasfilm’s Kathy Kennedy, and ...

Should 'Mission: Impossible 6' Get a New Director?

We explain why this might be a good idea, and dole out some possible candidates. Story by Matt Cummings Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation is well on its way to box office success, enjoying one of the highest critic reviews of the summer at 93% (via Rotten Tomatoes). The news of its second weekend at number one is perhaps a clearer indication of its staying power over newer competition: moviegoers love Mission: Impossible . Therefore, it was with a feeling of certainty that Paramount last week announced that plans for Part 6 are already underway . Under normal circumstances, it would be likely that everyone associated with a past hit be retained in order to guarantee that another hit happens. However, in the case of this franchise, it might not be necessary. Part of M:I 's continued success lies in seeing a new director each time take the reins to make their own distinction, something current director Christopher McQuarrie acknowledges in recent interviews. Nothi...

Could Benicio Del Toro Be The Villain In Star Wars: Episode VIII

Rian Johnson is directing the sci-fi sequel for Disney and Lucasfilm, which will release the movie in 2017. Benicio del Toro has the offer to play the villain in “ Star Wars: Episode VIII ,” multiple individuals familiar with casting process have told TheWrap . Discussions are still in the very early stages, but Disney and Lucasfilm are high on the Oscar-winning “Traffic” star. A representative for Disney did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Del Toro would be a strong fit for the sci-fi sequel, as he’s able to conjure menace on a whim. He’d also continue “Force Awakens” director J.J. Abrams’ diverse vision for the “Star Wars” universe that will be led by John Boyega, Daisy Ridley and Oscar Isaac going forward. Rian Johnson is directing “Star Wars: Episode VIII,” which is expected to start shooting early next year in advance of a May 26, 2017 release date. Ram Bergman is producing the film with Lucasfilm’s Kathy Kennedy. Del Toro is already a member of the D...

J.J. Abrams Directing Star Wars: Episode IX?

The Force Awakens director might strike back. By Brandon Wolfe While J.J. Abrams is kicking off the relaunch of the Star Wars franchise with December’s The Force Awakens , he has been conspicuously absent from the announcement for any of the subsequent films announced, be it the regular chapter entries or the spin-offs. Rian Johnson is taking the helm of Episode VIII and was widely speculated to be directing Episode IX as well given that he's also been announced as that film's writer. However, according to Latino Review , the Disney higher-ups are so pleased with what they’ve seen of The Force Awakens that Abrams is now their first choice to direct the ninth episode of the saga. If true, this stands as a major boost of encouragement for what Abrams will deliver later this year. Star Wars: Episode IX is set for release in 2019. Rian Johnson Talks About Star Wars: Episode VIII

We were definitely excited when Looper and Breaking Bad director Rian Johnson was selected to craft Star Wars: Episode VIII and, most likely, Episode IX . From the sounds of his recent reports on the new job, his experience working within the revitalised franchise is more positive than even he expected. Now the below doesn't have much in the way of new information about the films, unsurprisingly, but should reassure people that Johnson feels creatively inspired by the whole Lucasfilm vision. A lifelong Star Wars fan, Johnson is enthusiastic about the work, which helps assuage some worries that directors with vision are being hired and then yoked into a system that negates what they can bring to the work. Chatting to Terry Gilliam on the TalkHouse Podcast, Johnson was positive about his time so far, even though it’s early days. “I’m just starting into it, but so far it’s the most fun I’ve ever had writing. It’s just joyous,” he says. “The first movies I was making in my he...

Star Wars Episode 8 Being Directed By...

Check out the surprising director announcement...and no, it's not JJ Abrams. For awhile now, we've known that Star Trek reboot-er JJ Abrams was in charge of bringing the next films to theaters. Under his leadership, we've seen images of the cast and tantilizing set pieces . But it was always assumed that he would be directing Episodes 7-9. Not so. According to multiple sources including Deadline, it's been announced that writer and director Rian Johnson (Looper) will not only be taking over as director AND writer for Episode 8. There's also rumors spreading that Johnson will be doing the same with Episode 9. While TheWrap is known for their accuracy, we're not ready to call that deal done yet. He has been plugged to pen the final installment, but it's the directorial duties that have yet to be finalized. This would place Johnson at the head of one of the most iconic film series in history, with Lawrence Kasdan (rumored to be in charge on the sp...
