Renee Zellweger would be taking on the challenge of playing Judy Garland in a new biopic called, simply, Judy. If you wondered what she'd look like, you now have the chance. Director Rupert Goold has now kicked off shooting the film in London, working from a script by The Crown's Tom Edge. The story is set in 1968 as Garland arrives in chilly, swinging London to perform at a sell-out run of her show. It's 30 years since she appeared in The Wizard Of Oz, and if her voice isn't quite the same, her intensity has grown. She faces battles with her management and charms the musicians she works with, while also starting a romance with Mickey Deans, who will go on to be her fifth husband. Yet she's also haunted by memories of a childhood lost to Hollywood and struggling with the desire to be back home with her kids. Variety is reporting Renee Zellweger (“Chicago”) will star as Judy Garland in a new movie about the show business legend’s final concerts in London. Pathé and Calamity Films are behind “ Judy ” and principal photography is set for next February, in London. Opening in the English capital in the winter of 1968 as Garland arrives for a five-week run of sell-out concerts, the movie will also recount the icon’s battles with management, and relationships with musicians and fans. As the concerts get underway the star of stage and screen is 47 and exhausted, fragile, and wanting to be at home with her kids, casting into doubt whether the shows, at the Talk of the Town nightclub, can go on. “Judy” is based on a script written by Tom Edge (“The Crown”) and will be produced by BAFTA winner David Livingstone (“Pride”) for Calamity Films. The original Bridget’s director Sharon Maguire is back to make this one, from a script that has seen work by Fielding and Far From The Madding Crowd ’s David Nicholls. Plot-wise, details are still locked in Bridget’s diary, but word is that the new movie will be based on Fielding’s columns and not her third book, Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy, which (spoiler) outraged fans by offing Mark Darcy and leaving Bridge to raise their kids alone. Instead, the title points to the early days of Bridget getting unexpectedly preggers and exploring the joys and challenges of motherhood. Patrick Dempsey is also in the cast in an unspecified role, though he could well be a new romantic rival, since Hugh Grant won’t be showing up in this one. There’s some debate as to whether Dempsey might be the father instead of Colin Firth ’s Mark, which would add the requisite dramatic tension and potentially a chance for Firth to put his Kingsman skills to the test and avoid another rubbish slap fight.
