Movie Review: THE SECOND BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL

Another round of old Brits in India. Plus an American this time I guess I just have a soft spot for cliched, generic charming movies like this sequel, I tend to overlook its flaws when it’s outweighed by the film’s stellar performances and wonderful themes, but this doesn’t happen all the time, THE SECOND BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL does feel like second rate in almost all of its aspects, but whenever the great Judi Dench and the great Maggie Smith take the screen and do their thing, all those other weak links seem to fade away. If you were a fan of the first film, you might want to take your expectation down a notch just a tiny bit just so you don’t yourself up for disappointment, only because screenwriter Ol Parker basically imagined what the next chapter would be like and he focused it on Sonny’s (Dev Patel) engagement and upcoming wedding with the beautiful Sunaina (Tina Desai) The Marigold hotel is doing well, the elderly residents seem content and happy but they all have...

Belle Review: Fluff Script Detracts from Otherwise Solid Film

The period piece Belle suffers from a fluff script but looks amazing in the process. Review by: Matt Cummings If an image can tell a thousand words, then the painting featured at the end of the period piece Belle could fill a library. And while its story of 18th Century English slavery and social convention looks amazing, it's too self-congratulatory and lacks the emotion of a real winner. Inspired by the true story, Dido Elizabeth Belle (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) is an illegitimate mixed-race daughter of Admiral Sir John Lindsay (Matthew Goode), who is raised by Lindsey's great aunt and uncle (Tom Wilkinson and Emily Watson) after Lindsay dies at sea. While Elizabeth chases suitors for a dowry, Belle remains isolated and the victim of the rigid social patterns of 18th Century England. Soon, tradition collides w...
