Production has begun in the U.K. on writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson’s untitled new film. Three-time Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis is joined in the cast by Lesley Manville , who was a BAFTA Award nominee for Best Actress for Another Year, and Vicky Krieps , whose films include A Most Wanted Man and Focus Features’ Hanna. Focus holds worldwide rights to the film, and will distribute the film in the U.S. later this year with Universal Pictures handling international distribution. The film’s producers are JoAnne Sellar, Megan Ellison, through her Annapurna Pictures, and Paul Thomas Anderson. The executive producers are Peter Heslop, Adam Somner, and Daniel Lupi. With this weekend’s (limited) release of Inherent Vice , director Paul Thomas Anderson will deliver his second movie set in the 1970s. The first, of course, was Boogie Nights , the sprawling tale of the rise and fall of a porn superstar named Dirk Diggler . The film was hardly a box-office success, but it has become a cult hit over the 17 years since its release. Anderson has developed a reputation as a modern auteur, while Mark Wahlberg , the young rapper–turned–underwear model who played the preternaturally endowed Diggler, has become preternaturally successful Hollywood superstar. Josh Brolin is the latest star to join the killer cast of Inherent Vice , Paul Thomas Anderson ‘s adaptation of the Thomas Pynchon detective novel. Brolin has been set for a key role, and will star alongside Joaquin Phoenix, Reese Witherspoon, Owen Wilson, Martin Short, and Jena Malone, with Sean Penn reportedly eyeing a role as well. The film shoots this summer for Warner Bros, and PTA is producing through his Ghoulardi Film Co. along with JoAnne Sellar and Daniel Lupi. Brolin will finish that film and promote the three films he has coming out in the fall. He stars in the Robert Rodriguez/Frank Miller-directed Sin City 2: A Dame To Kill For, for The Weinstein Company. After that comes Oldboy, the remake he stars in for director Spike Lee, and then the Jason Reitman-directed Labor Day, opposite Kate Winslet. That film opens in limited release at Christmas.   THE MASTER Review By: RAMA Let's find out what RAMA thought of THE MASTER . I’m not sure why people are fussing about how this movie may have been intended to make fun of Scientology, because I certainly don’t see it that way. I’m not defending Scientology, but THE MASTER is not about a certain specific denomination, it’s about more than that, it’s about writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson’s exploring how aimless and purposeless life was for soldiers post-WWII, how that longing for something greater than themselves can be easily taken advantage of by a false belief system. I see THE MASTER as PTA’s way of telling everybody to not simply take things as they are given to you but to keep investigating to see if there’s any truth to it, THE MASTER is PTA’s way of studying the influencer and the influenced, how even the leader doesn’t fully control his own destiny, I think PTA is more interested in the two lead characters’ affecting and desperately needing and feeding off each

Robert Downey Jr . is making plans to fill the fall hole in his schedule with the lead role in Inherent Vice for writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson . Anderson has been working on a screenplay adaptation of the 2009 Thomas Pynchon novel while trying to get another film -- an untitled exploration of a religious organization sometimes referred to as The Master -- off the ground. Once Downey dropped out of Disney's Oz, the Great and Powerful last month, it freed him to do another movie later this year after he shoots The Avengers for Marvel and Disney. His commitment to Anderson's movie has recently grown serious. Vice is a comparatively accessible Pynchon work that tells the story of a stoner detective who gets wrapped up in a number of mysteries in 1969 L.A. while the Manson Family trial growls in the background.
