The all-too-familiarity of The Hitman's Bodyguard still makes for an enjoyable time. Review by Matt Cummings If the old adage can be believed that some old movies need a newer version to rekindle interest in the genre, then The Hitman's Bodyguard might be the best example we've seen this year. And though it feels exactly like its predecessors, the film entertains with a way over-qualified cast that oozes comedic gems and sports great action, ready (but not quite qualified) to join the pantheon of buddy-cop comedies. Michael Bryce (Ryan Reynolds) is living the high life as one of the world's top bodyguards, escorting an asset all the way to the airport, only to see him get whacked at the last second. As a result, Michael soon loses everything, sending his self-professed "AAA" status spiraling. Last we heard, just over a year ago, the English-language remake of The Raid was still a going concern. Screen Gems were behind it, The Expendables 3's Patrick Hughes was directing, and Taylor Kitsch and Frank Grillo were in talks to star. This morning, however, it's less Iko Uwais and more Pete Tong, since both Hughes and Screen Gems have abandoned the project. Only production company XYZ Films remains attached. The Tracking Board's sources don't quite address exectly what's caused this collapse. They speculate that continual delays have forced the Aussie Hughes to move on to a more going concern, that of Sydney-To-Hobart Yacht Race disaster drama The Storm Warning - but quite what chilled the collective feet of Screen Gems remains to be seen. With three movies of varying quality and box office success out there (and more in development), you would think Sylvester Stallone would be quite happy with the amount of Expendables in the world. Yet he, along with producer Avi Lerner and Lionsgate have made a deal with the US Fox network to craft an “ event ” series (read: along the lines of 24: Live Another Day ) based on the gun-toting franchise to hit small screens. As rumors swirl regarding the second season of HBO's “ True Detective ,” Taylor Kitsch has been offered the lead in Screen Gems’ English-language remake of “ The Raid ,” multiple individuals familiar with the project have told TheWrap . While Kitsch's team has been pushing HBO and “True Detective” creator Nic Pizzolatto to cast him as the young male lead of the second season, they've been positioning him for “The Raid” remake in the meantime. Patrick Hughes (“The Expendables 3”) is directing the action movie, which is gearing up for a January 2015 shoot. Coincidentally, that is when the second season of “True Detective” is slated to wrap filming. While two sources told TheWrap that Kitsch is in negotiations for “The Raid,” one cautioned that the two sides remain apart on financial terms of the proposed deal.
