Movie Review: #Snowden

The story of Snowden is fascinating - this one isn't. Review by Matt Cummings If the film documentary CitizenFour brilliantly raised fear of Big Brother to alarming heights thanks to NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, the new Oliver Stone biopic is meant to add a human face to one of the biggest stories of this decade. Too bad it fails in its mission, because while the topic is compelling, the film itself really isn't. Injured while training to be an Army Ranger, Edward Snowden (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) decides to apply for the CIA, instantly winning the approval of his boss and instructor Corbin O’Brian (Rhys Ifans) with his genius-level computer intellect. But Snowden's enthusiasm and early successes are soon marred when he realizes that his own government has been collecting data on every American by using the broadly-powered and redoubtable FISA protocols. For Snowden, the news is particularly devastating when he realizes his girlfriend (Shailene Woodley) is...

Nicolas Cage Joins Oliver Stone's Snowden

Apparently, Nicolas Cage is too good to be subsumed into long casting announcements and needs his own story. All right, so perhaps his deal took a little longer to nail down, but he is indeed joining the cast of Oliver Stone’s Snowden , adding his name to the cast in the role of a former US intelligence officer. Almost all the rest of the cast for Stone’s latest was revealed yesterday, with Zachary Quinto, Melissa Leo, Tom Wilkinson, Rhys Ifans and Joely Richardson joining Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Shailene Woodley and Timothy Olyphant in the based-on-truth drama about the NSA whistleblower. Stone is making the film in Munich, having bought up two prime sources for his film: Time Of The Octopus, a novel by Snowden’s Russian lawyer Anatoly Kucherena, giving him access to the story of the whistleblower who reluctantly sought asylum in Russia and had to wait to see if the country would grant it. The producers also have the option on Guardian journalist Luke Harding’s book The Snowden...

The filmmakers also have the option on Guardian journalist Luke Hardin’s book The Snowden Files: The Inside Story Of The World’s Most Wanted Man . Pitched as a thriller, Stone’s film will chart the experiences of Snowden, the whistleblowing National Security Agency contractor who began leaking classified documents to former Guardian journalist Glenn Greenwald in June 2013. Shia LaBeouf Flying Around Pinkville

Stone & LaBeouf To Reunite For The Movie Director Oliver Stone revealed in his commentary track on the Blu-ray release of Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps that he and that film's young lead, Shia LaBeouf , have discussed reuniting for Pinkville , a Vietnam War investigative drama about the My Lai massacre of March 1968 . Stone said that he and LaBeouf discussed reteaming for Pinkville while they were making the Wall Street sequel. According to the helmer, LaBeouf is interesting in exploring the subject matter because his father was a helicopter pilot in Vietnam. Pinkville was set to begin filming in Southeast Asia in December 2007, but was shelved at the 11th hour due to the then-impending Writers Guild strike. Stone had assembled a cast that included Bruce Willis, Channing Tatum, Michael Pena, Woody Harrelson, Xzibit, Michael Pitt, Toby Jones, Jason Behr and Cam Gigandet . Given his age and his dad's role in the war, it seems likely that LaBeouf would want to play ...

Michael Douglas Gives Insight About Wall Street 2 Michael Douglas is starting shooting today on Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps for director Oliver Stone, but we managed to grab a few minutes with him over the weekend and got the lowdown on what Gordon Gekko has been up to in the years between films. "It’s 22 years later," Douglas explains. "Gordon has done about eight years in jail and got out in about 2001. The picture predominantly focuses on these last couple of years on Wall Street, which nobody anticipated. We shot the first one in 1986 and it was a wild, wild colourful time. And here we have both a train crash and a larger-than-life period leading up to that train crash. It’s an exciting time to make a picture about Wall Street." "Is this a softer Gekko? Eh, I can’t say that. I think he’s got some amends to make. (Laughs) We’ll see what he’s up to." "We’ve got Josh Brolin playing what I guess is the villain of the piece. There’s a little bi...
