Another Reboot: I Know What You Did Last Summer

Of all the titles being fed into the maw of the Reboot Machine , we really didn’t think anyone would add 1997 horror I Know What You Did Last Summer to the conveyor belt. Still, Sony has other ideas, hiring Oculus co-writer/director Mike Flanagan to go back to the source novel – yes, the film had one – for a new stab. Flanagan , who is working once again with co-producer Jeff Howard (who contributed to the script that turned Oculus from a short into a successful horror film), is working from Lois Duncan’s 1973 book about a group of teens that cover up a fatal car accident, only for them to be stalked and slaughtered in revenge. The story spawned the 1997 original, which saw Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Philippe among the leads, and 1999’s I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, which reunited Hewitt and some of the cast for more slasher action. Sony will no doubt be hoping Flanagan can bring his abilities with lower budget horror to help kick off a pro

Oculus Review: Loses Steam After a Rough Start

The intricate supernatural thriller Oculus loses steam after a rough start. Review by: Matt Cummings We've been in the middle of a sort of horror film renaissance, gifted with low-budget but wonderfully-terrifying fare, such as 2013's The Conjuring and the Insidious series, as well as 2012's Sinister . Meanwhile, lesser films like The Marked Ones continue to miss the point about what really scares. Their efforts to hunt for low hanging fruit in the form of standard shock are surrounded by truly boring plot lines. The Mike Flanagan flick Oculus is caught somewhere between them, boasting several strong points but mired in frustrating third act. Orphaned siblings Tim (Brenton Thwaites) and Kaylie Russell (Karen Gillan) have a dark secret: their father  (Rory Cochrane) and mother (Katie Sackhoff) were victims of possession by an antique mirror. Initially written off as murder/suicide, Kaylie doubts the reports and sets off to prove the mirror's true natu

April 2014 Movie(s) On Our Radar

Only One April Release Gets Our Full Attention. By: Matt Cummings  After a strong March which elevated three of our four 'radar' releases into the top 10, April arrives with only one guaranteed hit. Typically a dull month, April 2013 featured only one release ( Oblivion ) and 2012 had none. This year promises one that should challenge leaders The LEGO Movie and Ride Along : Marvel's Captain America: The Winter Soldier . That's good or bad depending on how you look at it, with Hollywood essentially throwing all its eggs in Marvel's lap. But for now, we'll highlight a couple of others that might make a decent profit, but which should only bounce off Cap's vibranium shield: Captain America: The Winter Soldier (April 4th)  Marvel - and its parent company Disney - are now the undisputed leader in Hollywood. The studio famous for Thor, Iron Man, and The Avengers releases the second Captain America film on a crest of both critical praise
