A remake of the invasion movie " Red Dawn " — with its villains now digitally modified from Chinese to North Korean — will finally hit American shores next year. The new version of the Reagan-era classic will be released in the U.S. by independent studio FilmDistrict , according to people familiar with the matter but not authorized to discuss it publicly. FilmDistrict is finalizing a deal with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer , the studio that produced the movie in 2009. In the original "Red Dawn," a group of teenagers in a Washington town battle invading Soviet forces; in the remake, the invaders were changed to Chinese. But that decision turned the film into a hot potato. After MGM emerged from bankruptcy in late 2009 and decided it wouldn’t release the movie, no other studio wanted to touch “Red Dawn” for fear of offending the government of China, a hugely important market in the increasingly global film business. Northern California boy  Jeremy Renner continues his march toward Hollywood domination. The two-time Oscar nominee, who has been on an upward trajectory since starring in best picture winner The Hurt Locker, has formed The Combine, a production company he will run with partner Don Handfield. And the company is hitting the ground running, developing a Steve McQueen biopic that will serve as a starring vehicle for the actor. James Gray, who wrote and directed We Own the Night, is attached to write the McQueen screenplay, which will be based on the two books by Marshall Terrill: Portrait of an American Rebel and The Life and Legend of a Hollywood Icon. Video director Ivan Zacharias is attached to make his directorial debut on the project. Renner and Handfield will produce the McQueen project with Hurt Locker producer Greg Shapiro, Cross Creek Pictures’ Brian Oliver (one of the producers of Black Swan), and Zacharias’ producing partner Nick Landon. Mission Impossible 4 Pushed Back Back in February, it was announced that Paramount will release Mission Impossible 4 starring Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt again, produced by J.J. Abrams, on Memorial Day 2011 but Paramount today has pushed back the release date to December 16th, 2011. Last we heard, Brad Bird (The Incredibles) was in talks to direct MI:4 but nothing is finalized or confirmed yet but I’m sure we’ll hear more soon enough. Along with that is the announcement of the release date of Super 8, the super secret project directed by J.J. Abrams, produced by Steven Spielberg, will see the light of day sometime in Summer 2011. Tom Cruise Is Set For Mission Impossible 4 Ah snaps with my finger in a Z formation. Tom Cruise will be coming back as Ethan Hunt in Mission Impossible 4. This is really great news for me having a man crush on TC. Screenwriters Josh Applebaum and Andre Nemec are already attached to write the script. The intention is to make this Cruise's next film and start shooting by summer for a Memorial Day 2011 weekend release. And I can definitively say that, despite chatter to the contrary, IM4 will be very much of an Ethan Hunt pic with Cruise as the main character.
