While Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse won the weekend box office race with a debut of $35.4 million thanks to kids and fanboys, Clint Eastwood's The Mule scored a victory of its own by appealing to America's heartland and decidedly older moviegoers. The Mule , from Warner Bros., opened to $17.2 million to land one of the top starts ever for a film helmed by Eastwood, who remains Hollywood's most prolific director at the age of 88. The hilarity of The LEGO Ninjago Movie is matched only its disappointing ending. Review by Matt Cummings If you've been keeping up on LEGO's series of animated/live-action movies, a trend has begun to emerge: fill it with memorable and established characters, turn up the silliness, be incredibly meta, and cater to adults as well as kids. The result has seen the colorful brick company taken in a wondrous $430m domestically, although it experienced a $100m drop between 2014's Movie and 2017's . Now comes The LEGO Ninjago Movie , a property with a very specific following but really none of the pedigree in terms of talent or recognition behind it. The wholly unethical Collateral Beauty is a manipulative affront to common decency. WARNING: Massive Spoilers Ahead Review by Matt Cummings If you've ever lost a child or experienced the tragic death of someone, Collateral Beauty is supposed to offer a cathartic means for release and reflection. Unfortunately, it also tries to play with our emotions while manipulating its lead through wholly unethical means, only to learn that angels like money too. And for that ultimate of movie sins, it earns my pick as one of the worst movies of the year. Having endured the death of his 7 year old daughter due to brain cancer, Howard (Will Smith) is now a broken man. His ad agency, one of the most respected in New York, is on the brink of being sold, while Howard writes angry letters to Death, Time, and Love. He mails them, hops on his bike, and then proceeds to his job, only to build complex domino structures while his partners (Kate Winslet, Michael Pena, and Edward Norton)
