BOB MARLEY: ONE LOVE Featurette

Michael Mann To Direct Eight Part Miniseries “Hue”

Michael Mann (“Public Enemies,” “Heat”) and super producer Michael De Luca (“Moneyball,” “The Social Network”) have acquired the rights to “Black Hawk Down” author Mark Bowden’s book, “ Hue ” which chronicles the turning point of the American War in Vietnam, according to Deadline. They’re going to turn this into an eight to ten hour miniseries, many of its episodes will be directed by Mann. By January 1968, despite an influx of half a million American troops, the fighting in Vietnam seemed to be at a stalemate. Yet General William Westmoreland, commander of American forces, announced a new phase of the war in which “the end begins to come into view.” The North Vietnamese had different ideas. In mid-1967, the leadership in Hanoi had started planning an offensive intended to win the war in a single stroke. Part military action and part popular uprising, the Tet Offensive included attacks across South Vietnam, but the most dramatic and successful would be the capture of Hue, the countr...

Heat Prequel Novel On It's Way

According to Deadline Writer-director Michael Mann , long one of the most literate translators of words to the screen, has made a deal to launch Michael Mann Books. The imprint will generate a series of novels with a stable of writers and the properties will simultaneously be developed for film and television. Mann will look through his own long list of credits for ideas, and a big piece of news here is that high on the priority list is a prequel novel dealing with the principal characters of Heat, Mann’s seminal crime thriller. The prequel novel will cover the formative years of homicide detective Vincent Hanna ( Al Pacino ), Neil McCauley ( Robert De Niro ), Chris Shihirles ( Val Kilmer ), McCauley’s accomplice Nate ( Jon Voight ), and other characters so brilliantly layered in the 1995 film. Mann based that film on stories of a lot of real criminals and cops, and references to past experiences are peppered throughout the picture. It’s a bit of reverse engineering, since so man...

Christian Bale & Noomi Rapace Could Join Enzo Ferrari Film

According to THR , Paramount Pictures has picked up distribution rights to Michael Mann ’s long-in-the-works Ferrari project titled Enzo Ferrari . At the same time, Noomi Rapace is in talks to star opposite Christian Bale , who will play Enzo Ferrari, the Italian auto mogul. The long-gestating project finally got traction when it secured funding from Vendian and YooZoo Bliss Fund. YouZoo will distribute the movie in China while Vincent Maraval’s Insiders will begin selling territories at AFM. The project adapts the 1991 book Enzo Ferrari: The Man, The Cars, The Races, The Machine written by Brock Yates. The book recounted Ferrari’s ascent -- working for Alfa Romeo first as a racer then as a developer, founding his own company in 1947, racing victories in the 50s and 60s, letting Fiat slowly take control of the company. But it also showed his tyrannical and manipulative nature, his pushing drivers to the breaking point (and even death), his hatred of his lifelong marriage and h...

Christian Bale To Play Enzo Ferrari In Upcoming Biopic

According to Deadline Christian Bale has said yes to playing Italian car magnate Enzo Ferrari in the long-awaited film by director Michael Mann . The picture, which will shoot next summer, isn’t set up just yet. But as we ponder the films up for grabs at the upcoming Telluride, Toronto and Venice Film Festivals, is there a more desirable presale property right now than Ferrari, with Mann and Bale driving the vehicle? Mann has been working under the hood of this film for close to 15 years, at one time in partnership with the late director Sydney Pollack. It is a real passion project for the director and is exactly the kind of picture he should be making. The film takes place in 1957, a year where passion, failure, success and death and life all collided. Several actresses circling the female leads. Mann and Bale previously teamed on 2009’s Public Enemies. I know things didn’t work out for Mann most recently with Blackhat. As a longtime fan of his films, this sounds to me to be...

Blackhat Review: Hacker Thriller Serves Up the Caution

Michael Mann's cautionary Blackhat is expertly shot and well-acted but needs a serious edit. WARNING: This review contains spoilers. Review by Matt Cummings When the world is threatened by an unprecedented cyber attack, the US and Chinese governments band together to discover its source, gathering a list of talented cyber agents like the Chinese officer Chen Dawai (Leehom Wang) and his sister Kien Chen (Wei Tang) along with the FBI agent Carol Barrett (Viola Davis). But that won't be enough to stem the next wave of terror, so Dawai goes to the only person who can help: the imprisoned cyber criminal Nicholas Hathaway (Chris Hemworth). As their investigation leads all over the world, Hathaway must track the terrorist Sadak (Yorick van Wageningen) and his ruthless associate Kassar (Ritchie Coster) before they completely wipe out Hathaway's team and carry out another attack. This isn't Mann's first violent picnic - he seems to thrill in placing his ch...

Chris Hemsworth To Star In Michael Mann Thriller

It's been nearly four years since Michael Mann last directed a feature film, but the wait for his next project may be over: The " Public Enemies " director has attached himself to helm an untitled thriller for Legendary Pictures with Chris Hemsworth attached to star. Mann had been developing the project for over a year, co-writing the script with Morgan Davis Foehl, who is also penning "Mass Effect" for Legendary. Plot details are unknown, other than that the film takes place in a world of cyber threats and attacks. Thomas Tull, Mann and Jon Jashni will produce with Alex Garcia exec producing. Mann had most recently produced "Witness" and directed the pilot of HBO's "Luck," which he also exec produced but has not helmed a film since Universal's "Public Enemies" in 2009. Mann has since been linked to a handful of films, including "Big Tuna, "Agincourt" and the racing pic "Go Like Hell" fo...

Jason Statham To Star In Heat Remake

Don’t panic, Michael Mann fans: Brian De Palma and Jason Statham are not planning the unthinkable by cooking up a new version of his classic crime pic. Nope, the Heat they are actually planning to remake is a 1986 Burt Reynolds drama. The plot will find Statham play a recovering gambling addict who remains on the fringes of the circuit providing protection to players who can afford his services. His quirk is he refuses to use a gun, sticking to his fists and a few trusty knives. But then a friend is nearly killed in a beating from a mobster, and our hero swears revenge. William Goldman adapted the original screenplay from his 1985 book (which trivia fans may wish to note was published over here as Edged Weapons), and he’s back on writing duty this time around, updating the tale to the present day. So could it be called Reheated? This isn’t the first time Statham’s filled someone else’s shoes in remake territory: last year saw him taking on a former Charles Bronson role in The...

Michael Mann To Direct Film About 1967 Le Mans. Battle Between Ford & Ferrari

Michael Mann is in talks with 20th Century Fox to develop and potentially direct Go Like Hell , the real-life story of the famous competition between the Ford Motor Co. and Ferrari that led to Ford winning the Le Mans in 1967. Ford was the first American car maker to win the world’s oldest car race, held in France. For years, Ferrari had dominated the contest. Based on A.J. Baime’s book, the Fox project recounts how a young Henry Ford II — determined to infuse new life into his family’s company — decided to get into the European racing scene. With the help of racer Carroll Shelby and Lee Iacocca, Ford built and designed a car that could take on Ferrari cars, known for their speed and style. They ultimately won the Le Mans, the world’s oldest car race that takes place each year in France. Insiders say the initial idea is for Mann to develop the script. Texas Killing Fields To Star Bradley Cooper And Sam Worthington

Texas Killing Fields To Star Bradley Cooper And Sam Worthington Texas Killing Fields’ was a fantastic script, really special script, but it was just so dark it would never get made. You’d have to have half a dozen super megastars for a studio to even consider making it,” Boyle said of the project. “It’s by an ex-cop from Galveston and visually would have been extraordinary, but I don’t think that’s going to happen. Well, it looks like they may have found their super mega-stars. Unfortunately, according to our inside source, The Hollywood Cog, Danny Boyle is no longer attached to the project. Instead, the project — which is being produced by Michael Mann, who was once himself attached to direct — has fallen into the lap of Ami Mann, Michael’s daughter. whose only notable experience was as the second unit director on Heat and a long in-development and probably dead, Racing the Monsoon (which at one time had Michael Douglas attached). Ami Mann’s inexperience is noteworthy here, I woul...

Michael Mann To Direct Autobiography of Robert Capa

Michael Mann To Direct Autobiography of Robert Capa Columbia Pictures and director Michael Mann will team to tell the story of renowned war photographer Robert Capa , using the snapshot of a torrid two-year romance with Gerda Taro during the Spanish Civil War. The studio has acquired “Waiting for Robert Capa,” a Spanish language novel by Susana Fortes, and set Jez Butterworth to adapt it. Mann will produce through his Forward Pass banner. He will also direct. The story begins in Paris in 1935, where Capa, a refugee from Fascist Hungary, met Taro, a refugee from Nazi Germany, met with the intention to become photographers. The outbreak of the Spanish Civil War one year later began Capa’s emergence as the most renowned war photographer ever, and established Taro as the first frontline female battle photographer. She was killed in the battle of Brunete in 1937. Mann, who last directed “Ali” and produced “Hancock” for Columbia, had long wanted to find a way to make a film about Capa and fo...
