Michael Jackson #1 Top-Earning Dead Celebrities

The Dead Shall Rise When They Hear Dollar Signs Michael Jackson never graced Forbes’ annual Celebrity 100 list during his life. In death, the King of Pop earned more in the past year than any star on that list, apart from Oprah Winfrey. Jackson not only took the No.1 spot on our 10th annual ranking of the Top-Earning Dead Celebrities , with gross earnings of $275 million, he out-earned the other 12 deceased stars on the list combined. Still more impressive: His estate's 12-month haul was greater than the pooled earnings of this year’s two biggest living acts, U2 and AC/DC. Jackson’s posthumous earnings come from his stake in the lucrative Sony/ATV catalog, the hit Sony ( SNE - news - people ) film This Is It and renewed fan interest in music, videos and all things Michael Jackson. “The death of Michael Jackson really put a focus on--crassly, quite frankly--what someone’s worth when they’re deceased,” says David Reeder, vice president of Corbis' GreenLight, which manages t

Michael Jackson's Thriller Movie

Michael Jackson's Thriller To Become A Film Michael Jackson , who reportedly earned $275 million posthumously over the past year for his estate, isn't slowing down anytime soon.  GK Films is in active negotiations to acquire a package for a film that is being fashioned around his groundbreaking hit song Thriller . The film, which has been quietly shopped over the past several weeks by Real Effects Entertainment , has Kenny Ortega attached to direct, and The Hangover scribe Jeremy Garelick to write the screenplay. While GK is in the driver's seat, I'm told that Fox 2000, Mandate/Lionsgate and Summit Entertainment are all in the mix on what will shape up as a pricey rights deal, but which will turn out to be a film budgeted at under $50 million. Plot is being kept under wraps but I understand it has to do with the song's folklore, involving Vincent Price and the town he grew up in. All of this deal making is subject to a deal being completed with Jackson's e

" We Are The World" Part Two To Benefit Haiti

" We Are The World" Part Two To Benefit Haiti With the aftermath of the effects on Haiti looks like they will be re-recording the song " We Are The World" and recruiting the music industry's heavy hitters, to benefit the relief efforts. The duo is summoning lots and lots of talent from Grammy weekend to stay an extra night — Monday Feb. 1 — and come to the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles. There, they will celebrate a quarter century since Ken Kragen, Richie and Michael Jackson organized the original “We Are the World” with Quincy. This time the artists invited include Usher, Natalie Cole, and John Legend. But you can bet that more names will be added shortly and that all the Grammy nominees and participants will be asked to come as well. Grammy producer Ken Ehrlich will produce the event, which will then be turned into a video and single just like it was in 1985. Don’t be surprised if Wyclef Jean joins in, along with Sting, Fergie, Alicia Keys, Justin Timberlake a

Michael Jackson Inducted Into The National Film Registry

Michael Jackson Inducted Into The National Film Registry The late performer's 1983 video "Thriller" is among the 25 motion pictures that have been selected this year for preservation by Librarian of Congress James H. Billington. The list of films, announced Wednesday, ranged from the 1911 silent film "Little Nemo," which mixed animation with live action, to 1995's "Scratch and Crow," an animated short film made by Helen Hill. The films named to the 2009 National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress include the 1957 sci-fi classic "The Incredible Shrinking Man," as well as the Muppets' movie debut in 1979's "The Muppet Movie." This year's selections bring the number of films in the registry to 525. Under the terms of the National Film Preservation Act, each year the Librarian of Congress names 25 films to the registry that are "culturally, historically or aesthetically" significant, to be preserved

“Captain EO” To Make Return To Disneyland

“Captain EO” To Make Return To Disneyland I reported on this back in September and it's going to happen the beginning of next year. Click Here to read Story The word from Hollywood is that Disneyland is planning to revive Michael Jackson’s 3D film beginning in January. Heavily influenced by “Star Wars,” the 1986 short film was produced by George Lucas and directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Back in those days, Michael had the money from “Thriller” to make anything happen. Among the cast: Michael, Anjelica Huston, Dick Shawn -- the latter died less than a year after “Captain EO” was released. It’s the 3D version coming back to Disneyland, but you can watch a less complex version on YouTube (see below). “Captain EO” was pulled from Disneyland years ago. But with Jackson’s “This Is It” up to about $220 million worldwide, interest in him is rekindled. It’s another tragic irony for Jackson. And, believe it or not, the “This Is It” companion CD looks like it sold well over 125,000 copies l
