BOB MARLEY: ONE LOVE Featurette

#PacificRim2 May Not Happen Now

According to THR  Legendary wanted to produce a sequel to del Toro's  Pacific Rim , which was made under the Warners deal and turned into one of those films that grosses a lot ($411 million worldwide) while being so costly that a follow-up isn't a sure thing. Sources say Legendary liked that the original performed exceptionally well in China, where the company is heavily invested, but for now the project — which had been ramping up to make a release date in August 2017 — has been halted indefinitely and will be pushed back (if it gets made at all). Universal Pictures' decision last week to let Thomas Tull's Legendary Pictures take its Kong: Skull Island project to Warner Bros. in the midst of a five-year production and financing deal is being read as a symptom of relationship trouble between the companies. Several sources say there has been strain, in part because Tull kicked off the deal in 2014 with a couple of clunkers that he put through Universal's dist...

Is 'Godzilla 2' Moving Forward?

Writer Max Borenstein gives clues as to the sequel's chances. Story by Matt Cummings When the rebooted Godzilla arrived in 2014, audiences rewarded it with a $93 million opening weekend and a worldwide haul of over $528m. But it's also safe to say that fans were disappointed at the lack of scenes (only 8 minutes total) which actually featured the big guy in all his glory. So when Legendary Pictures announced it was moving forward with a planned June 8, 2018 release, fans were understandably worried that he might get the same treatment. From Screenwriter Max Borstein's recent comments, it seems like we have little to fear. According to a recent interview with Collider, Borenstein - who's working on the Fox Television adaptation of Minority Report - had this to say about what's coming in the sequel: "I’m writing it now, and it’s really going to be great. I don’t want to go off book and tell you anything that I’m not allowed to tell you. The res...

Godzilla 2 Already in the Works

The Thunder from Way Down Under is getting a sequel. Story by: Matt Cummings With box office numbers from Friday surpassing everyone's expectations, it was a no-brainer that Godzilla would dominate the weekend box office. Since then, it's done nothing short of breaking worldwide records for 2014 ($196m) and took in an impressive $14.1m in domestic IMAX receipts. As a matter of comparison, Roland Emmerich’s 1998 version grossed $55 million in its Memorial Day opening weekend, $136 million domestically, and $379 million overall. That's not bad numbers, but fans cringed at many elements of the plot and even at Godzilla (her)self. Thankfully, the studio passed on making a sequel, even though it cost only $130m to make. And while we liked it ( read our review ), there hadn't been word from the studio whether we might see a sequel. That got answered on Sunday, when Deadline confirmed that Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have approved a sequel. Accor...

A Divorce For The Seventh Son

The fallout from the divorce of former filmmaking sweethearts Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures continues. With Legendary already agreeing to drop future financial interest in the Man Of Steel franchise for a cut of Interstellar’s action, the two companies have now parted ways over Jeff Bridges adventure The Seventh Son . Legendary originally financed the fantasy film, which sees Bridges as a warrior wizard who's training Ben Barnes to fight witches. It’s already been plagued with delays, including issues in completing the effects in time for the release date. Up until last month, Warners was still planning to release the film, having brought Bridges, Barnes, Antje Traue, Kit Harington and director Sergei Bodrov to the San Diego Comic-Con to promote the movie. Still, the situation is not completely hopeless: Legendary has made a new pact with Universal, so it will take over responsibility for finding the movie a new birth. At least, everyone involved will hope it f...

Pacific Rim Review. Pleasant Surprise

Pacific Rim Review By: Nicolas Souza Big Action, Bigger Robots Please welcome guest review Nicolas Souza. Nicolas will be reviewing movie from time to time. Giant monsters, huge robots, and a decent story holding it all together; this is the easiest way to explain Pacific Rim . This summer action blockbuster wonderfully delivers all of that, but doesn’t blow you away. Fans of giant monsters and robots will not leave the theater disappointed. The action scenes between the two are fantastic. On par with the action in other giant robot movies like Transformers, I believe Pacific Rim is slightly better. This is due to the limit of monsters on screen at once. With only a few monsters or robots fighting at once, there is no need to cut from fight to fight. This gives more time to the wonderfully designed Jaegers, German for hunter, and Kaiju, giant monsters. Director Guillermo del Torro (Pan’s Labyrinth) assembles a human cast that fills its role nicely for a movie that’s main st...

Pacific Rim Review. Add It To Your Summer Movie To-Do List.

Pacific Rim Review By: MattInRC The monster/robot flick Pacific Rim is way too much fun for you to notice all the plot holes. Among the film genres of my youth, Kaiju was not one of them. Sure, I liked the idea of giant monsters attacking cities - and even some such as the 1954 Godzilla - had almost believable plots. But I always found them predictable: you can only smash so many buildings and endure so much poor voice dubbing before they turned into a joke. With Kaiju films, it's always been two steps back ( Roland Emmerich's Gozilla remake ), one step forward ( JJ Abrams' Cloverfield ); what the genre needed was a big Hollywood budget AND a great script to get people re-energized about the genre. Pacific Rim does at least part of that really well by adding human-controlled robots into the mix. And while there are plot holes a mile wide and a predictable ending to boot, the film is tons of fun. You'll find yourself willing to forgo these issues in favor of w...

Duncan Jones To Direct Warcraft Film

Duncan Jones is taking on Legendary Pictures' adaptation of the popular video game universe. Duncan Jones is making the jump to big-budget tentpole movies, signing on to direct Warcraft , Legendary Pictures’ live-action adaptation of Blizzard Entertainment’s video game universe. Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni are producing for Legendary along with Blizzard and Atlas Entertainment’s Charles Roven and Alex Gartner. Taking an almost kitchen-sink approach to fantasy, Warcraft , which has grown to be one of the most popular multiplayer online role-playing games out there, is part fantasy, part science fiction and — depending on the game you’re playing — includes elements such as dragons and orcs, zombies and werewolves, and aliens and spaceships. Legendary is keeping its script, written by Charles Leavitt, under wraps. The Warner Bros.-based production and finance outfit is eyeing a fall 2013 start and a 2015 release. Jones’ producing partner, Stuart Fenegan, will executive prod...

Aaron Johnson Eyed For Godzilla

Legendary Pictures is eyeing Kick-Ass star Aaron-Taylor Johnson to star in Godzilla , the Gareth Edwards-directed reboot of the franchise based on the iconic Japanese reptile. I’m told that Johnson, who starred in the Oliver Stone-directed Savages and Anna Karenina and followed by reprising in Kick-Ass 2: Balls To The Wall is the frontrunner for the job. He won’t make a final decision on whether or not to take the offer until he sees the final polish that Frank Darabont is writing based on the Max Borenstein script. Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni are taking the creative lead on this project — they just put Mary Parent on after she became a producer of Pacific Rim — and Warner Bros is distributing everywhere except for Japan. There, rightsholders Toho will handle the release. While there has obviously been a legal dust-up in the producing ranks, the film is still on course to begin production in March, with the film dated for a May 16, 2014 release. If he takes the gig...

War Is Brewing Over Upcoming "Godzilla" Film

A battle is brewing between Godzilla producer-financier Legendary Pictures and the two producers who brought the project to the company. Gozilla , the famed Japanese monster property, is getting a new movie treatment from Legendary and Warner Bros. (the studio has a 25 percent stake) with Gareth Edwards directing. The project is ramping up for a spring production start, with offers out to several top actors. ( Joseph Gordon-Levitt was on the list but has since passed). According to Legendary sources, the company and producers Dan Lin and Roy Lee are sparring over creative and financial differences. Warners insiders say Legendary wanted the producers to reduce their fees. When the pair declined, the company began exercising a pay-or-play clause in their contracts to boot them from the project, a nearly unheard-of move. The dispute first was reported by Hitfix. Lin, a producer behind this week's Gangster Squad, and Lee, brought the much-sought-after Godzilla project to...

New Wrath Of The Titans Trailer

The first trailer for myth-raiding sequel Wrath Of The Titans arrived back in December, but now a slightly longer destruct-o-fest has hit the magical interwebs. If you are righteous and brave, take a look below. Liam Neeson Interview Part 1 talks Wrath Of The Titans- This time around, we find Perseus ( Sam Worthington ) 10 years on from his adventures opposite giant beasties in Clash. Trying to live a normal but probably slightly smelly life as a fisherman, he’s summoned back into action when mighty Titan Kronos begins to break his troops out of imprisonment and threatens Zeus ( Liam Neeson ) and co. But because the Gods can’t deal with these pesky problems themselves, and because Hades ( Ralph Fiennes ) is stirring up yet more trouble, guess who has to step in? Jonathan Liebesman (Battle: Los Angeles) is behind the camera and, if the trailers are any indication, he and Warners have simply taken everything about the first movie and cranked it up a notch, including Worthington’s...
