Deadline is reporting After a series of false starts, the movie about notorious New York City crime boss John Gotti and his relationship with the son who followed in his footsteps is back on solid footing. Kevin Connolly has been set to direct, with John Travolta still aboard to play Gotti Sr. The financing has been firmed by Emmett/Furla/Oasis Films, Fiore Films and Herrick Entertainment. Lionsgate Premiere will release the film domestically through its multi-picture deal with E/F/O. Mobster biopic Gotti is getting a second life. Veteran filmmaker Joe Johnston (Captain America: The First Avenger) has come aboard to direct the film for Fiore Films' Marc Fiore and Radar Pictures' Ted Field, while Relativity Media has snapped up U.S. distribution rights. Ben Foster has been cast as John Gotti Jr. in Barry Levinson’s Gotti: In The Shadow of my Father , starring John Travolta, Al Pacino and Kelly Preston . Levinson begins shooting the independent film, scripted by James Toback and produced by Fiore Films, in New York in January. The project has the blessing of Gotti Jr., and delves into his relationship with his father, John Gotti Sr., the head of the Gambino crime family. Gotti Sr. will be played by Travolta. Foster’s film credits include The Mechanic, 3:10 to Yuma and X-Men: The Last Stand . His television credits include HBO’s Six Feet Under. Levinson, the writer and director of Diner, Tin Men and Avalon, took over the project after director Nick Cassavetes bowed out in May over scheduling conflicts. Nick Cassavetes will direct the screenplay by Leo Rossi, which focuses on the relationship between John Gotti Sr., the head of the Gambino crime family who died in prison in 2002, and his son John Gotti Jr., who took over the family business for his father, served time in prison, but then successfully escaped conviction in four subsequent racketeering trials. Marc Fiore is producing for his Fiore Films. Marty Ingels, the former comic turned talent broker, has come on board the project as executive producer.
