BOB MARLEY: ONE LOVE Featurette

The Sopranos Prequel Film On It's Way

He courted controversy by finishing the HBO series with a cut to black. Now David Chase is revisiting his The Sopranos , planning a prequel film to the show called The Many Saints Of Newark . Chase has apparently had this idea bubbling in the back of his head since at least the end of the show in 2007, and now New Line is developing the film. The writer and producer, who has previously said he'd never revisit the world and its characters except in the form of a prequel, and he's now written the script with Lawrence Konner, who worked on the series. The Sopranos launched in 1999, following the lives of various mobsters in New Jersey, and focusing on Tony Soprano (the late James Gandolfini ). It won accolades and awards for its knotty stories, ending up with 21 Emmy Awards. It's not yet known which, if any of the characters will show up, since the story for this one is set in the 1960s, when the rivalry between African Americans and Italians turned violent. Chase has

The Drop Review: Gritty, Noir Taste of Brooklyn Crime

The Drop is old-school crime with a lovable puppy thrown in for color. There's two different - and nearly diametrically opposed - Brooklyn, New Yorks: the new one, filled with hipsters and well-to-do's who attend Brooklyn Nets games at the arena. The other is the Brooklyn of my grandmother's time: working class, tough, and filled with characters you'd never pass on a dark walk home. This is the world surrounding The Drop , a classic gritty Noir thriller that brings Brooklyn back to its deservedly old-school status. Bob (Tom Hardy) lives a solitary life in his dead parent's home, attends a soon-to-be shuttered church, and tends bar at Cousin Marv’s, a Brooklyn dive owned by his cousin Marv (the late James Gandolfini). Unfortunately, Marv has lost the bar to a Chechen gang who use it on occasion as a drop for all the dirty money they're making. After a robbery goes down in the bar, the Chechens demand their lost money, suspecting an inside job. But

The Drop Trailer Has Landed.

Notable not only for featuring the final film performance by James Gandolfini , The Drop also features the first pairing of Tom Hardy and Noomi Rapace and finds Dennis Lehane adapting his own short story. The Drop sees Hardy as Bob Saginowski, a lonely Boston barman and ex-criminal trying to go straight. Where Bob works is no ordinary water hole, however – it’s known in the neighbourhood as a place where shady money exchanges hands and danger lurks just beyond the doors. The bar is technically owned by Bob’s cousin Marv (Gandolfini), a man with his own connections to the crime scene and his own sins to atone for. At the same time that Bob rescues an abandoned pit bull puppy from a rubbish bin and romances Rapace’s Nadia, he finds himself caught up with the dog’s alarming former owner, the Boston mob, a heist-gone-wrong and at least one murder. Bullhead’s Michael R. Roskam directed this one, which Lehane drew from his story Animal Rescue (hence the puppy. It’ll arrive in th

The Incredible Burt Wonderstone Review. Has Some Truly Funny Moments

The Incredible Burt Wonderstone Review By: MattInRC Does the magician turf war comedy The Incredible Burt Wonderstone entertain, or does it perform an early vanishing act? The flashback comedy The Incredible Burt Wonderstone goes far beyond telling a tale of magicians competing for Vegas glory: it's a film that could have been made 20 years ago, a fact which might put off audiences who've been trained to accept lesser quality. In our age of raunch, nudity, and an almost-anything-goes kind of approach, things have gotten a bit...well...predictable. One can only see so many nude male body parts on a screen, or be witness to yet another sexual-religious reference before those and the dozens of other low-brow employments (with only the most basic storytelling included) become boring as well. Thus it's nice to see when a film can be funny, well-cast, AND tell a decent story without needing to settle for something beneath itself. Burt Wonderstone ( Steve Car

ZERO DARK THIRTY Review. It Ain't Pretty

ZERO DARK THIRTY Review By: MattInRC The mammoth ZERO DARK THIRTY  is a brilliant production, but be prepared - it ain't pretty. SPOILERS! As someone caught in the middle of the insanity of 9/11 (my wife and I were on vacation in Virginia at the time), I admit to having felt a spike of joy when President Obama announced the killing of Usama bin Laden in 2011. To me, the death UBL was the end of a dark chapter, but certainly not the end of the bigger book on worldwide terrorism. So much has changed since 9/11, as if any remaining shred of our innocence was lost. But while films like  ZERO DARK THIRTY  attempt to provide a kind of therapy for our tortured souls, we're still left wondering whether our country can ever return to normal. Thirty doesn't stray into that territory, settling instead on the pressure placed on human beings as they undertook the hunt for the most wanted man in America. The result is an engrossing effort that's at once hard to
