BOB MARLEY: ONE LOVE Featurette

Rihanna Joins Luc Besson’s Valerian

Once a stalwart of soundtracks Rihanna has been making inroads into acting in the last few years with movies such as Battleship and DreamWorks Animation’s Home . She’s now landed her biggest role yet, joining the cast of Luc Besson’s ambitious new sci-fi tale, Valerian . Originally created by writer Pierre Christian and artist Jean-Claude Mezieres in 1967, the series of graphic novels charts the adventures of the titular time-travelling agent ( Dane DeHaan ) and his female sidekick, Laureline ( Cara Delevingne ). Clive Owen is also aboard, playing a man named Commander Arün Filitt, but Besson has not revealed details about Rihanna’s contribution, but it sounds like she'll be a key element of the story. This promises to be the biggest project Besson has tackled since The Fifth Element, with visions of a futuristic world that blends that film with Star Wars and Blade Runner, populated with all manner of weird creatures and just five human characters. He’s spending $180 milli

Movie Review: HOME. Unmemorable & Generic

Home is cute and cuddly, sure, it's quirky and very bubbly. It's bathed pastels and has a shiny plastic feel. The quick laughs and familiar story should make it easy for the film to endear itself, but its that familiarity that makes it unmemorable and generic. The story of a pair of misfits from different worlds coming together is nothing new, and unfortunately Home doesn't bring anything to the table that would set it apart from its predecessors which were much better done. After a hive-minded alien race called the Boov conquer the Earth, they relocate the planet's human population -- all except for a little girl named Tip (Rihanna), who's managed to hide from the aliens. When Tip meets a fugitive Boov called Oh (Jim Parsons), there's mutual distrust. However, Oh is not like his comrades; he craves friendship and fun. After a potentially fatal mistake, Oh finds himself on the run from his own people. As their distrust fades, the pair set out together

March 2015 Films On Our Radar

What does the March box office have in store for us? We pontificate in our On the Radar Preview. Story by Matt Cummings January 2015 was filled so many interesting titles that no one apparently wanted to see, prompting us on a recent Inside the Bucket podcast to wonder why that month landed with such a thud. When February rolled around, we weren't exactly impressed with the plate Hollywood had placed before us, hence the reason why we didn't present a Preview article. Apparently all of you felt the same. February was the lowest since in terms of box office performance since 2006 ($533.2), with 50 Shades of Grey 'leading' before literally melting away after a strong opening. And yet, the box office is up 10%, for a variety of reasons that could repeat in 2016 if distributors have learned their lesson. March has also traditionally been a weak month, as evidenced by less-than-stellar numbers during the last four years: 2014: $741.2 (-24.9% from 2013) 201

What's Behind 2015's Early Strong Box Office?

The reasons for success could change the way movies are made, marketed, and released. Story by Matt Cummings With January and February box office typically representing a rough couple of months for Hollywood, it comes as a surprise that 2015 has been one of the most robust in years. With receipts up 10% from the same period one year ago, theater owners are selling more popcorn and not having to shut down entire wings of their buildings due to the lack of traffic. The reason - or reasons - are simple: American Sniper and Fifty Shades of Grey . These two titans have pushed ticket sales and general admission numbers to points that we typically don't see until April - that's when tentpoles and more lucrative productions begin to arrive, ushering in the wave of Summer blockbusters. Sniper has made $307.7 million since its opening in January, while Grey became the biggest debut for a movie in February history when it bent over a four-day total of $93 million. B
