TV Review: Hannibal “The Wrath of the Lamb” (Series Finale)

Cult series steps away from the table. Review by Brandon Wolfe Hannibal ’s third, and ultimately final, season carried with it the problem of reverence. In the first two seasons, the series carved out its own territory apart from Thomas Harris’ novels, staking its claim to the heretofore unexplored era prior to Red Dragon , when Will Graham worked as an FBI profiler and Hannibal Lecter was a psychiatrist and advisor. In these seasons, the show operated as a wackadoo procedural, a CSI where killers operate as avant-garde artists who will sew you into a tapestry with a hundred other bodies, fashion your corpse into a biological tree or rip you apart while wearing animal adornments and operating as a self-appointed werewolf. It was completely, gloriously insane, and it felt fresh and new. But with the third season, series creator Bryan Fuller made the understandable decision to finally tackle Harris’ source material, taking on adaptations of both the Hannibal and Red Dragon novels,

TV Review: Hannibal “The Great Red Dragon”

Series finally Hannibalizes Red Dragon Review by Brandon Wolfe One of the facets that made Hannibal ’s second season such a propulsive joy was its unpredictability. There was the tantalizing sense from week to week of not having the slightest clue where the show was going. Tackling areas outside of Thomas Harris’ source material freed the series from the shackles of rote translation, taking the characters to places unfamiliar to scholars of the Harris mythos. Will’s imprisonment, his ambiguous relationship with Hannibal Lecter, and even the fates of notable characters like Frederick Chilton, these elements were all played with wild-card abandon, clueing us into the notion that nothing we knew about these people was considered sacred. This was a series willing to play fast and loose with our perceptions of these characters and the events surrounding them. Hannibal was thrilling because it was rewriting the book on these people. Hell, it was rewriting four books. If Season 3 has fe

TV Review: Hannibal "Digestivo"

We now conclude the Hannibal portion of Hannibal. Review by Brandon Wolfe The Hannibal section of Hannibal (by which, I constantly need to clarify, is the show’s adaptation of the storyline from the novel and film of the same name) finally comes to a close, perhaps not a moment too soon. The meat of the 1999 novel by Thomas Harris and its subsequent 2001 film adaptation by Ridley Scott, have given the show license to steer into its artsier tendencies, the story’s ghoulish Eurocentricities feeding into the small-screen version’s penchant for horrifically gorgeous art direction and floridly poetic musings, often to its detriment. The Italian job to hunt down Hannibal Lecter released the show from its procedural shackles, yet rather than feeling like a freedom, casting aside that template left the show feeling adrift and without structure. The Thomas Harris universe has always functioned best when the monster being hunted down was someone other than Hannibal Lecter, and the show didn

Bryan Fuller Wants A #Hannibal Film

Fannibals, take heart! (Not literally, of course.) In a Comic-Con interview with Yahoo TV , Hannibal mastermind, Bryan Fuller , revealed that he’s weighing several potential avenues for continuing the show now that NBC has officially canceled it. One of those avenues would potentially be a standalone theatrical film. “The idea for Season 4 that we were intending to do could go into a film very easily,” Fuller teases, adding that he “can’t say too much about it, because it will spoil the end of this season.” That, and there are also additional rights issues to sort out, as he currently only has the ability to tell stories about Hannibal Lecter and Will Graham in the television realm. Still, Fuller’s optimism should feed the souls and stomachs of Hannibal devotees worried that the Season 3 finale will also be a permanent end. Fuller also makes it clear that he’d welcome Fannibal support in showing the appetite for more Hannibal, up to and including mailing body parts to the studio.

Amazon Prime Will Not Bite Down on Hannibal

No one wants seconds of this cult gem. By Brandon Wolfe Like so many of Dr. Lecter's victims, it's beginning to look like Hannibal might be dead for good. Following NBC's cancellation of the beloved, if poorly rated, cult series, showrunner Bryan Fuller isn't having much luck enticing other outlets to pick up the Peacock's table scraps. In addition to the recent revelation that Netflix would not be opening its doors to the series, Fuller has now confirmed via Twitter that Amazon Prime, the show's most logical home due to the service already streaming the first two seasons, has also declined to adopt the currently homeless cannibal. Making matters worse is the fact that the show's producing entity, Gaumont International Television, has allowed the options on lead actors Hugh Dancy and Mads Mikkelsen to expire, freeing them to field other film and TV offers. While both actors have professed loyalty to Hannibal , it isn't feasible for them to declin

TV Review: Hannibal "Contorno"

Déjà vu sets in on Hannibal’s European vacation. Review by Brandon Wolfe For an adaptation of well-known source material, Hannibal has thus far mostly marched to the beat of its own drummer. Seasons 1-2 took Thomas Harris’ famed characters and spun them in entirely new directions, with only brief references presenting themselves in certain lines and events (most notably with some of the Mason Verger arc near the end of Season 2). While the series has always marched inexorably toward direct adaptations of Harris’ novels and their subsequent film adaptations, it has played so fast and loose with the original texts that there was no reason to ever expect a rigid do-over of material with which fans are already so familiar. Which is why it’s so surprising, and disappointing, that “Contorno” opts to retread the ground already covered by Hannibal , the novel and film, so slavishly. This section of Season 3 had always consciously set itself up to tackle Harris’ third Lecter novel, but up

TV Review: Hannibal “Aperitivo”

Everyone wants a piece of Dr. Lecter. By Brandon Wolfe So massive was the bloodbath that ended Hannibal ’s second season that four episodes into Season 3, we’re still dealing with the aftershocks from that event. “Aperitivo” finally picks up with the entire cast and stands as a showcase for just how much Hannibal Lecter has damaged all of these people, both physically and emotionally. Everyone in “Aperitivo” is walking around with some Lecter-initiated war wounds, and though the cannibal barely appears in the episode (and even when he does, he’s consigned to brief flashbacks or dream sequences), his presence is deeply felt. So heavy is the shadow he casts over all of these people that he doesn’t need to be in their immediate orbit, doesn’t even need to be on the same side of the world, to consume their every waking moment. Take Alana Bloom, the last major question mark left hanging over the slaughterhouse that was once Hannibal’s home. She, too, survived, but with a shattered pelv

#Hannibal Has Been Cancelled

Buzzfeed is reporting Hannibal is done. Currently in its third season on NBC, the critically praised, little watched Hannibal has been canceled. Though the show has never been a mass hit, NBC has renewed it twice before because Hannibal has been inexpensive to license (because of international sales and a VOD deal). It has also drawn a fanatically devoted cult audience. Nonetheless, airing as a summer offering, Season 3 has hit series lows. Thursday’s episode drew 1.8 million viewers and a .5 in the 18 to 49 demographic. Season 3 is 13 episodes, and a spokesman for NBC confirmed that the show will air in full throughout the summer. Hannibal, created by Bryan Fuller, stars Hugh Dancy as Will Graham and Mads Mikkelsen as Hannibal Lecter. Critics have complimented its aesthetics and thoughtful approach to violence throughout its run. A statement from Fuller praised NBC, and also left the door open for the show to try to find another home. “NBC has allowed us to craft a televisi

TV Review: Hannibal "Primavera"

Will Graham is out for...vengeance? Review by Brandon Wolfe Hannibal continues to ease us slowly into its third season like a warm bath. Last week , we caught up with Hannibal and Bedelia on their dreamy – or nightmarish – European excursion, and now we are brought up to speed on Will and Abigail Hobbs. After a replay of last season’s drawn-out, stab-filled climax, Will awakens in a hospital bed to find Abigail greeting him with a large bandage on her neck. She claims that Hannibal knew how to slash her with such surgical precision as to leave her alive, yet despite that, she still claims loyalty to him. She wants to track him down not out of vengeance, but to reunite with the compelling man whose fate seems so powerfully intertwined with her own. Will claims to want the vengeance, but one wonders if there’s not a bit of that longing in him as well. These two men have a very complex relationship, after all. Eight months later, Will and Abigail arrive at the church in Italy where H

TV Review: Hannibal "Antipasto"

Dr. Lecter’s meal finally arrives after a long wait. Review by Brandon Wolfe Hannibal was one of last year’s many great television surprises. Like Fargo , it was a show that shouldn’t have worked, based on source material that didn’t seem like it would bend to the rigors of serialized television. The fact that it aired on NBC, a network that didn’t seem possible would, or could, ever go whole-hog on the sort of gruesomely explicit content one expects from any story featuring Hannibal Lecter, only made the series’ prospects seem even dimmer. But, after a solid yet not exquisite first season, Hannibal caught fire in its sophomore year, crafting a season as twisty and unpredictable as it was unprecedentedly gory by broadcast standards. Hannibal became this strange fever dream for its fans. We saw it with our own two eyes, but it didn’t seem real. How could it be this good? The series has been off the air for over a year now, its finale , airing the May before last, leaving the bul

Duchovny Open to X-Files TV Revival

Mulder Wants Back on the Case In a follow-up to the recent report that Fox intends on dusting off The X-Files in the near future, USA Today has revealed that David Duchovny, who starred on the series for seven of its nine seasons as Agent Fox Mulder, is open to reprising his role for the revival. Duchovny stated that he is "more than happy and excited to bring it back and do it again with (co-star) Gillian (Anderson) and (series creator) Chris (Carter)." The actor went on to say "I'm assuming that it will happen sooner rather than later now. We'll see what form, how many (episodes). Certainly I can't nor would I be interested in doing a full season. It will be in some kind of limited form. We're all old, we don't have the energy for a full season." Duchovny’s availability could be an obstacle. He will appear on the upcoming NBC series Aquarius , while Anderson has recently been upgraded to a series regular on NBC’s Hannibal . But this n

2014 TV Winners and Losers

Read on for the ten best and worst television shows of 2014 2014 TV Winners and Losers by Brandon Wolfe 2014 was a surprisingly great year for television, with an unusually large crop of incredible new series debuting alongside a handful of rejuvenated returning favorites. But as with everything, you take the good with the bad, and there was still plenty of bad this year. Here are my picks for TV’s ten biggest winners and losers of 2014. Winners 1. Fargo (FX) The year’s biggest surprise. There was no reason to expect anything from Noah Hawley’s ten-episode interpretation of the Coen Brothers classic. It seemed like the most thankless of tasks; at its best, it could only wither in the shadow of the film. But the show’s best turned out to be much better than anyone could have guessed, matching the humor and tone of the film while staking out its own unique ground. It helped that it was impeccably cast. The very British Martin Freeman disappears completely into the skin (and
