Soundtrack Review: 'Supergirl Season 1'

Although Season 1 may not be great, Supergirl: Season 1 Original Television Soundtrack is up, up and away. Review by Matt Cummings When CBS announced in 2015 that they would enter the superhero television party and produce Supergirl , audiences were concerned whether a network known for attracting older procedural audiences would actually know what to do with it. More specifically, would they screw it up and totally miss the central themes behind the character? Sadly, the answer was yes, as most audiences backed away by the end of its first season. CW, smartly realizing what it could do with a slightly-damaged product, brought it onboard (a small matter since CBS owns CW) and the early result sees a vastly improved Season 2. One thing that was never in doubt was Composer Blake Neely's Season 1 score, which - like its titular hero - flies to new and different heights, establishing itself as an Übermacht incarnate. When the Kryptonian Kara Zor-El (Melissa Benoist) es

Stephen Amell Says He's Done With The Arrow Suit

We analyze Amell's comment and the revelation after the jump. WARNING: This story contains spoilers. Story by Matt Cummings As the CW's Arrow bowed out last week to end Season 3, a ton of questions were raised about what lies in store for Season 4, some of them causing quite the stir on the Interwebs. For one, the episode - titled, My Name is Oliver Queen - showed The Arrow (Stephen Amell) walking away from both the title of Ra's al Ghul and the League of Assassins as well as his hero persona. The episode felt like a series finale, as Queen/Arrow/the former Ras drove off into the sunset with long-time friend/now lover Felicity Smoke (Emily Bett Rickards). But questions remain. We know Arrow is returning next year with Amell, and with Damien Dahrk poised as the next bad guy Queen will take on, it shouldn't be too long before we see Oliver put on the green suit once again. But in doing so, that could undo all of the events of Season 3, in which t

First Thoughts: 'Supergirl'

We weigh in on CBS' extended trailer. Story by Matt Cummings Ever since we first reported that CBS was developing a Supergirl series for their Fall lineup , our opinion (and that of most of the Internet) has been the same word - uneasiness. The idea wasn't bad and CBS' logic (at the time) seemed sound: bring the next baddest good guy they could find to the screen that wasn't named Superman. But in looking at the extended trailer below - which we announced yesterday - our concerns have moved far beyond uneasiness. See it for yourself, and see if your thoughts align with our own: From the beginning, it's clear that Producer Greg Berlanti ( Arrow , Flash ) is trying to capture the magic of Flash's memorable first season into a bottle he can replicate with any DC hero he desires. But the result looks cheap, melodramatic, and seems to return to many themes already echoed in other DC movies and television episodes. This isn't even the secon

Flash/Arrow Spinoff News: Hawkgirl to Join Hero Team-Up

We learn today who one of the three "mystery" heroes will be. Story by Matt Cummings Those new to the superhero-on-television trend might have forgotten the one that started it all: CW's Smallville , a mix of teenage melodrama in its first 8 seasons, and a fairly good superhero tale in its last two. During those final seasons, we were introduced to the mother of all superhero team-ups, The Justice Society of America, which featured Doctor Fate, elder versions of The Flash and The Green Lantern, and Michael Shanks as the nearly-immortal Hawkman. Hidden within the epic "Absolute Justice" was Hawkman's origin story, featuring the story of his dead love, Hawkgirl. Fast forward one disappointing series finale and two very successful - and frankly better - series in The Flash and Arrow , and we've arrived at a sort of full circle. For it was revealed today by Deadline that one of three "mystery heroes" has been cast in the team-up

#SUPERGIRL First Look

The new Supergirl costume feels very different—and in this case, that’s a good thing. See the entire suit after the Jump... Warner Bros. released the first shot of Melissa Benoist in costume for the new CBS series from Greg Berlanti, Ali Adler and Andrew Kreisberg. Gone are the days of the bright blue and red color scheme, as this Kara Zor-El appears to be taking a walk on the dark side—figuratively, of course. Also different from the costume Helen Slater donned in the ’80s is that Kara is showing off less skin now that her boots go above her knees and she appears to be wearing stockings underneath. And she certainly isn’t sporting the bare midriff Kara has often appeared with in the comics. The costume, designed by three-time Oscar winner Colleen Atwood, also feels very reminiscent of the texturized one Henry Cavill dons in Man of Steel, even down to the positioning of the cape. “In designing Supergirl, I wanted to embrace the past, but more importantly, thrust her into

First Look: The A.T.O.M.

Arrow Producers Reveal The Latest Super Hero Costume Story by David Clark Former Superman Returns Brandon Routh is currently playing the role of Ray Palmer/ATOM on the CW show Arrow , a brainy scientist/corporate-type named for his superpower providing suit called an Advanced Technology Operating Mechanism - A.T.O.M. Truth be told, the Atom character has gone through multiple variations in the DC Comics universe. The original Atom was an awkward college student turned physicist with limited superpowers at best. Another version of the Atom appeared in the Suicide Squad comics as a minor character. The CW has selected a version of the character known as the Silver Age Atom. In the original lore, Ray Palmer became Atom when he discovered the fragments of a white dwarf star. He utilized those materials to fashion a technology which allowed the shrinking of his own body down to the subatomic level. Over time the character became less dependent upon technology and

The Flash To Be Directed By Green Lantern Scribe?

The Flash To Be Directed By Green Lantern Scribe? By Last we heard about a proposed movie based on DC Comics' Flash, writer David Goyer said it was "shrouded in mystery." Well, the mystery has lifted a bit, if we are to believe our athletically inclined pals at IESB.net: They're reporting that Greg Berlanti, co-writer of the upcoming Green Lantern and director of Life as We Know It, is in line to direct: The name should ring a bell or two, Berlanti wrote "Green Lantern" with one my favorites Marc Guggenheim and was once attached to direct the film before WB settled on Martin Campbell. It's unclear whether Flash will be based on Goyer's initial idea or will be written by someone else. And, of course, way to early to know who will put on the red suit, though Ryan Reynolds was once Goyer's choice (he's not involved and will instead play Hal Jordan in Green Lantern).
