Hollywood's Positive Month Doesn't Cure The Patient's Long-Term Issues. By: MattInRC Back in late March, we reviewed the top box office performers year-to-date but also lamented about Hollywood's continued domestic woes . Among the bad news we reported at that time: As of March 30th, the industry (compounded monthly) was down a staggering 63%; Five of the top 10 films were leftover releases from 2012; April was similarly terrible, reflecting a 12% loss from 2012 - at $634,100,000 - with a compounded-monthly loss of 75%; The market hasn't seen such poor performances since 2011. These bits of data could have created bad omens for the Summer 2013 schedule, which does not have an Avengers, Dark Knight Rises, or Skyfall (all of which made $2 billion domestically) to lead the charge. But, we did have several intriguing releases such as Star Trek: Into Darkness , Fast Six , and Iron Man 3 . So, how did the critical month of May fair for Hollywood? A

G.I. JOE: RETALIATION Review By: MattInRC While it has its issues, the long-delayed G.I. JOE: RETALIATION is better than Rise of Cobra . But that's not saying much. I completely understand how upset Nerd America was with 2009's G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra . It was silly, poorly cast, and barely stuck to canon, resulting in an embarrassing debut for the franchise. The movie was passable as rainy day fare, but I do get the venomous reaction that emanated from Joe fans. Undaunted, Paramount moved forward and in 2012 G.I. JOE: RETALIATION was set to be released. Trailers were previewed, Hasbro's toys were sent to the stores, and then something extraordinary happened: the movie was postponed one week before its release. In an act unseen for as long as I can remember, moviegoers and Joe fans cringed and questioned Paramount's 'We're converting the movie into 3D' hogwash. And so finally, after almost a year of delay, Retaliation arrives in theaters

Director Jon M. Chu is in talks to take the helm of Sony's Masters of the Universe , an adaptation of the 1980s Mattel toy line, his reps confirmed to THR. The filmmaker, whose credits include Step Up 2 and Step Up 3D as well as the documentary Justin Bieber: Never Say Never , would take the project on as the follow-up to another adaptation of a toy line, G.I. Joe: Retaliation . The film would be the second adaptation of the material, after Gary Goddard’s 1987 film starring Dolph Lundgren, which notably flopped at the box office. Sony Pictures and Escape Artists have attempted to launch the project several times based on a script by Alex Litvak and Mike Finch, entitled Grayskull. Escape Artists partners Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch are producing.
