Edge Of Tomorrow Sequel In The Works

That a sequel to Edge Of Tomorrow (or as it ended up named for some home entertainment releases, Live Die Repeat: Edge Of Tomorrow ) is in development is hardly news, as we've known that director Doug Liman has been trying to crack the concept for a while. Now, though, Deadline brings word that Warner Bros. is giving someone else a crack at the script, as The Invention Of Lying's Matthew Robinson is on board. The first film found Tom Cruise as combat-allergic public relations officer disgraced and thrown into battle against alien forces by his commanding officers. He finds himself trapped in a time loop, dying in various ways until he meets tough special forces soldier Emily Blun t, and learns how to fight. Putting knowledge from his repetitive deaths into practice, he hatches a plan to defeat the extraterrestrials. Right now, Cruise and Blunt are holding off on signing official deals to return until they and Liman are all happy with the script and we'd be shocked –...

Movie Review: Happy Death Day

Groundhog Day horror riff sees its shadow. Review by Brandon Wolfe In Groundhog Day , Bill Murray’s soul-deadened weatherman Phil Connors is forced to relive the same dreary day over and over until he gets it right and learns to be a good person. During the course of his endless temporal hiccup, he must endure syrupy yokels, an obnoxious former classmate and the constant spurning of the woman he loves. But one thing Phil didn’t have to contend with on this metaphysical gauntlet of self-betterment was a masked psychotic with a knife murdering him ad infinitum. The question that Happy Death Day , the latest product rolling off the Blumhouse horror assembly line, asks is—what if he did? The Phil Connors surrogate here is the unfortunately named Tree Gelbman (Jessica Rothe), a self-centered mean girl blithely sowing chaos around her college campus. Tree spends each night in a drunken, bacchanalian stupor, breaks hearts for sport, engages in an affair with her married professor and is...

The Wall On Digital HD August 1 & On Blu-ray (plus Digital HD), DVD, & On Demand August 15

From the acclaimed director of Edge of Tomorrow comes the deadly action thriller, The Wall , arriving on Digital HD August 1 and on Blu-ray (plus Digital HD), DVD, and On Demand August 15 from Lionsgate. Portraying U.S. military sharpshooters, Golden Globe® winner Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Best Supporting Actor, Nocturnal Animals, 2017) and WWE Superstar John Cena (Trainwreck) star in this nail-biting game of cat and mouse that keeps audiences on the edge of their seats until the final shot is fired. The Wall is a deadly psychological thriller that follows two soldiers pinned down by an Iraqi sniper, with nothing but a crumbling wall between them. Their fight becomes as much a battle of will and wits as it is of lethally accurate marksmanship. The home entertainment release of The Wall includes audio commentary with director Doug Liman and actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson, a “Facts from the Front Lines: A Visual Journey Through The Wall” featurette looking at the making of the film, and...

Edge Of Tomorrow Sequel Has Hired Writers

Though it didn't look likely when the film initially hit theaters, the momentum behind a sequel to 2014's Tom Cruise-starring sci-fi Edge Of Tomorrow (or Live Die Repeat: Edge Of Tomorrow as it was awkwardly named for its home entertainment release) has been growing, partly thanks to a big haul worldwide. Now the follow-up has hired writers, with Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse aboard to work with director Doug Liman. And lest you think this won't somehow result in another pairing of Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie (who did work on the first movie's script), rest easy – he's in talks to come aboard as a producer and develop the screenplay alongside Shrapnel and Waterhouse. Quite what they'll come up with is anyone's guess at the moment, especially since the first film seemed to wrap up its story fairly neatly. But given the time-looping aspects, anything is possible. This could be a pre-sequel-semi-reboot-quel set in an alternate dimension where Emil...

Doug Liman In Talks To Direct Gambit

With original director Rupert Wyatt departing the project two months ago, it was looking as if the X-Men spin-off Gambit may not make its planned release date of October next year. Channing Tatum 's superheroics should now be back on schedule, however, with Edge Of Tomorrow director Doug Liman in final talks to step aboard. Liman already has a strong relationship with Fox having made Mr & Mrs Smith and Jumper with the studio to solid box office results. He’s also, clearly, experienced with both big name talent and effects. Gambit is not his first brush with a Fox/Marvel project either: he was on the shortlist to direct The Wolverine after Darren Aronofsky dropped out. That gig was ultimately won by James Mangold. Simon Kinberg and Lauren Shuler Donner remain producers on the project, which Tatum has been chasing for some years. Josh Zetumer wrote the screenplay, based on a treatment from comic book stalwart Chris Claremont. It's planned as a stand-alone film whi...

McQuarrie Talks Edge of Tomorrow Sequel Possibility

Tom Cruise's long day of alien-fighting could be extended. By Brandon Wolfe Writer/director Christopher McQuarrie has forged a strong creative bond with Tom Cruise in recent years, going from Jack Reacher to Edge of Tomorrow to the current hit Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation . But while Rogue Nation is a critically lauded blockbuster and Jack Reacher is about to receive a sequel , Edge of Tomorrow is the collaboration that sort of got lost in the shuffle, underperforming last year despite near-unanimous praise. But last week, Cruise mentioned to the press that he had an idea for an Edge of Tomorrow sequel, and in an interview with Uproxx , McQuarrie has addressed the chances of it coming to fruition. It all comes down to Warner Bros. and Doug Liman and Emily Blunt saying yes. The idea is there. At worst, it's the kernel of an idea - which is, on one hand, great, but on the other hand, I know what a nightmare that is. I know that I'll be in the void trying to f...

#EmilyBlunt To Ride In Bronco Belle

Edge of Tomorrow and Into the Woods star Emily Blunt is attached to play the lead role in bull-riding drama Bronco Belle from first-time writer-director Khurram Longi. Blunt is set to star as Raylene Jackson, a stubborn but vulnerable and determined American woman with a chip on her shoulder who dreams of becoming a champion bull-rider. Supported by an old-time trainer out to redeem himself and a hustler promoter, Jackson battles through heartbreak, prejudice, broken dreams and bones to reach the top of the sport. The Hollars producer Allyson Seeger will produce alongside Adulthood and Kidulthood producer George Isaac. Embankment Films will launch the project among buyers in advance of the Cannes market, with the team aiming to shoot in autumn 2015. Longi told ScreenDaily how he was inspired to write the script after a recent road-trip across America led him to the popular southern sport: “We were driving down from New York and ended up in Texas where by chance we stum...

Tom Cruise & Doug Liman Re-team For Mena

Universal pounced on Gary Spinelli’s based-on-truth drug pilot spec script Mena last year, throwing down a million dollars to secure the rights. Ron Howard briefly considered making it, but now Edge Of Tomorrow star and his director, Doug Liman , are in talks to take over instead. The title refers to Mena , Arkansas, the site of much of the action in the extraordinary life of Barry Seal, the focus of the film. Seal was a pilot for TWA in the 1970s who lost his job when he was caught flying plastic explosives from Miami to Mexico for an anti-Castro group. He subsequently went solo as an aviation consultant, and began a lucrative second career smuggling cannabis and cocaine between South and North America, eventually getting entangled with the notorious Colombian Medellin Cartel. When he was caught, he made deals with the CIA and DEA to continue his activities as an informant and spy. His adventures saw him encounter infamous names like Pablo Escobar and Jorge Luis Ochoa Vasquez...

Big Movie Questions - Q4 Report

As 2014 comes to a close, we look back at several movie questions we've posed throughout the year. Story by Matt Cummings The fourth quarter of the movie season is much like the holiday season: theaters crowded with customers and Hollywood licking its chops in hopes for strong returns. As 2014 has unfolded, it's clear that Hollywood's business plan was not as strong as one would have hoped, showing off a great Q1, a good Q2, and a frankly awful Q3. And while the year has delivered the great ( Captain America: The Winter Solider and The LEGO Movie ), the very good ( The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1 ), and the surprising ( Guardians of the Galaxy ), several of our Big Movie Questions were yet to be answered. With the holidays wrapping up, we can close out 2014 by unwrapping the rest of our gifts. We've collected all the questions we've asked this year into one article so you don't have to look back to see them all. Welcome to our 2014 Big Movie Q...

Spoiler: Edge Of Tomorrow Alternate Ending Revealed

Doug Liman‘s Edge of Tomorrow is easily one of the most beloved films of the year. It’s a hit with critics and has garnered passionate reactions from its fans. The only problem people seem to have is with its ending. Before we go any further: beware of spoilers if you haven’t seen Edge of Tomorrow yet. If you haven’t, shame on you. The movie is so different, fresh and original that, to some people, ending on a familiar/happy note doesn’t gel with its riskier choices. Would it have been more badass if Major Bill Cage ( Tom Cruise ) had died to save the world? Of course he does sacrifice himself repeatedly, but what if he had stayed dead? The problem is that a downer ending isn’t everyone’s idea of a good time. But crowd-pleasing commerce isn’t why the film ended the way that it did. Genre demand is why. filmschoolrejects spoke with screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie , who explained the original script for Edge of Tomorrow was tonally much darker. Cruise stressed the import...

Best Movies Of 2014 So Far

Though 2014 is only at the halfway mark, it’s already shaping up to be one of the best movie years on record, thanks to wisecracking Legos, hipster vampires, and a certain Budapest hotel . Here are our favorite flicks so far: What are some of your favorite? Leave a comment. See the list after the Jump... Captain America: The Winter Soldier From a story standpoint, Captain America: The Winter Soldier — in which our beloved Cap finds himself targeted by shadowy government forces —is one of the tightest Marvel films to date. Using the ’70s espionage thriller as a template, Winter Soldier is the rare comic-book caper that’s not only free of bloat, but also rooted in the real world. Throw into the mix the easy chemistry between Scarlett Johansson and Chris Evans; a fearsome and complex adversary in the Winter Soldier; and parkour-packed action sequences, and you’ve got one of the smartest superhero movies ever made. Edge of Tomorrow Many viewers decided to skip Tom Cruise’s tim...

Weekend Box Office Report: June 29th 2014

Age of Extinction wipes out the competition. Transformers: Age of Extinction rolled out to an impressive $100 million opening in the U.S. and $301.3 million worldwide, becoming the top opening film of 2014. Its opening is not the highest of the series: that still belongs to Revenge of the Fallen ($108 million). Although the film cost an estimated $210 million, the film has already made most of that back, even if you add marketing to that total. The success of its opening week can be traced to two things: Director Michael Bay reloading the cast with the more fan/press-friendly Mark Wahlberg and better heavyweights Stanley Tucci and Kelsey Grammer, and the Transformers name itself, which always guarantees large opening crowds and plenty of buzz. And while the film has gotten slammed on RottenTomatoes - with a measely 17% approval rate - it's faired better on other sites like CinemaScore, which was given an "A-" by fans. We weren't impressed at all with A...

The Fault In Our Stars Rules The Box Office

It was a battle of romance vs. sci-fi this weekend at the American box office, and love really did conquer all, as The Fault In Our Stars soundly trounced Edge Of Tomorrow in the quest for the top of the charts. With Fault novel writer John Green’s impressive social media following and the presence of rising star Shailene Woodley in the lead driving interest, The Fault In Our Stars drew fans of the book and the actress in droves, front-loading attendance for a result of $48.2 million this first weekend alone. That means the movie has already taken in four times the amount it cost to make, and shows no sign of slowing down despite a drop between Friday and Saturday, with audiences giving it a healthy thumbs up, which indicates it’ll have positive word of mouth appeal. It’s also yet more clear proof that films driven by women in front of the camera and in the audience can be hugely successful, especially when you consider that Fault deposed Angelina Jolie and Maleficent from the...

5 Character That Should Have Been Killed

Warning: Major Edge of Tomorrow Spoilers Ahead Edge of Tomorrow is one of those movies where the odds seem so hugely stacked against our two heroes, that it would have made sense for one of them to die. And while the point of the movie has Tom Cruise ’s Cage expire (over and over and over again), somehow he and Emily Blunt ’s Rita manage the unthinkable: Defeating the Mimics, saving mankind, and both living to see another (non-repeating) day. Edge of Tomorrow is a great action movie, but its resolution feels too neatly tied up in a bow. It’s also unfaithful to its source material: In All You Need Is Kill , the Japanese novel on which the film is based, Rita isn’t so lucky. We love happy endings as much as the next moviegoer, but there are certain movies we think could have been improved by adding a component of loss and tragedy. Here are five SPOILER-FILLED examples that come to mind… 1. Tom Cruise’s Son in War of the Worlds (2005) The Steven Spielberg-directed thrill...

Edge of Tomorrow Review: Killer Déjà Vu is Great Until the End

Edge of Tomorrow is a great time travel epic that stumbles at the end. Along with cancer survivalists, the newest fad in movies and television these days is the time travel plot. But in their efforts to either ret-con older broken tales or use it as vehicle for the story, they've become way too complex for their own good. Filled with either unresolved plot holes ( X-Men: Days of Future Past ) or offering nothing of value in the larger scheme of the picture ( About Time ), directors are leaving audiences distinctly confused as they emerge from theaters. Such is the case with Edge of Tomorrow , an enjoyable f/x epic that falters in the very final scene. In a war-torn future where an alien invasion has destroyed most of Europe, Army PR Officer Bill Cage (Tom Cruise) is swept up into the conflict after his demotion and arrest. With little military training, Cage soon finds himself on a battlefield in which no human will survive. But his early fall in the battle unleashes an...
