Movie Review: #WonderWoman

Wonder Woman surprises in both its heady action and anti-war humanity. Review by Matt Cummings If the current state of the DC Cinematic Universe could be translated into an actual form, it might resemble a dumpster fire. Fueled by the disappointment of Batman Vs Superman: Dawn of Justice and lit afire by the should-have-been-better Suicide Squad , Warner Bros has endured a wave of Internet rage that it fully deserves. Luckily, the fourth entry - Wonder Woman - arrives to put out that fire, resetting this franchise with terrific acting, superb action sequences, and several appealing and frankly surprising storylines. Diana of Themyscira (Gal Gadot) grows up young and defiant, loves her mother Queen Hippolyta (Connie Nielsen), but desires to be trained as an Amazonian warrior. Sneaking out at night, she learns from her aunt General Antiope (Robin Wright), who sees great things in Diana but must hide the girl's real destiny from her. Years later when World War I arr...

#Anomalisa – Movie Review

A reimagined, sluggish, but intriguing view of one man’s descent into madness. Review by Erika Ashley Michael Stone is a business man, author, husband, father, inspirational speaker, adulterer, and madman. While on another business trip to promote his customer service oriented self-help book, “How May I Help You Help Them?” Michael is surrounded by the same faces and voices. Living his life in utter boredom and mundanity he attempts to rile up some kind emotion or passion by reaching out to an ex-girlfriend he wronged 10 years ago. After his first attempt of connection crashes and burns you get a sense that something might actually be wrong with Michael himself. He continues on his evening by taking advantage of a naïve fan with horribly low self-esteem, named Lisa. Michael thinks he’s found his soulmate because she is a true anomaly in his routine existence until she too fades away into the abyss of his mental disarray. First, this film is animated. Unnecessarily animate...

Movie Review: Anomalisa

Puppets master human flaws in one of the year’s best. Review by Brandon Wolfe Charlie Kaufman has been stamped with the defining label of “weird” ever since his big screenwriting breakthrough with 1999’s Being John Malkovich , and that broad descriptor tends to obscure the searing human streak that runs through his work. Kaufman’s films undeniably skew in oddball directions, but the emotions his characters evince are painfully real. His films almost always center around outsiders grappling with blistering inner torment, trying desperately to make sense of the world they live in and their place within it. A Kaufman protagonist is always adrift, urgently seeking some measure of solace, meaning and understanding. Despite the avant-garde milieus in which they inhabit, they are often some of the most relatable characters in film. Taking his place in the Kaufman ranks alongside the dejected puppeteer of Malkovich , the tortured screenwriter in Adaptation , the lovelorn romantic of Etern...

Movie Review: 'Macbeth'

Macbeth is a twisted, brooding mess. Review by Matt Cummings Shakespeare reboots - that's a hard one to swallow these days - are usually met with a whipsaw of critical opinion. You either love Shakespeare remakes or you hate them. The problem has always been a simple one: bringing the material into current times without defeating the characters or brilliance of Shakespeare's works. Unfortunately, Michael Fassbender's Macbeth is hard to hear, nearly impossible at points to figure out, and places too much emphasis on style over substance. Although the warrior Macbeth (Michael Fassbender) savagely defeats an army for King Duncan (David Thewlis), Macbeth is a shattered man, having recently buried his young son high in what appears to be the Scottish mountains. When Duncan 'rewards' his efforts by granting his son the keys to the castle, Macbeth and his Lady (Marion Cottliard) plan for Duncan's death and their ascension. As the cycle of terror and ...

Movie Review: Legend

Tom Hardy doubles up, but film barely hits a single. Review by Brandon Wolfe Tom Hardy has become one of our most chameleonic actors. While many, if not most, movie stars of his stature cling to a dependable screen persona, Hardy has made himself tricky to pin down. The dandyish operative in Inception , the hulking, indelibly voiced Bane in The Dark Knight Rises , the soft-hearted lug in The Drop and the feral road warrior in Mad Max: Fury Road are each wholly distinct from one another. Hardy’s ability to immerse himself into his roles is so effective that the star himself is largely hiding in plain sight, vanishing without a trace into whichever character he embodies. That transformative skill has never served Hardy better than it does in Legend , where he is forced to conjure up two entirely divergent characters who look just like him. Hardy plays the Kray twins, Reggie and Ronald, who essentially ran the organized crime circuit of London’s East End throughout the 1960s. The d...

#WonderWoman First Image & Who's Joining The Cast

Warner Bros. has officially announced the commencement of filming on the solo Wonder Woman movie, complete with the full cast and a new first look photo of Gal Gadot as Diana Prince. Principal photography will take place on location in the UK, France and Italy. Joining Gadot in the Patty Jenkins -directed movie are: Chris Pine as Captain Steve Trevor, Robin Wright (House of Cards), Danny Huston (Clash of the Titans, X-Men Origins: Wolverine), David Thewlis (the Harry Potter films), Ewen Bremner (Trainspotting), Saïd Taghmaoui (G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra), Elena Anaya (The Skin I Live In, Van Helsing) and Lucy Davis (Shaun of the Dead, UK's The Office). Wright would seem to have replaced Nicole Kidman in the role she had been in negotiations for. Huston, likewise, would seem to be playing the role that rumor had it Sean Bean was considered for, but that's just speculation. Please Leave A Comment- Source- IGN
