The barely discernible Trespass Against Us can't decide what it is, and is therefore of little use to us. Review by Matt Cummings It's never a good sign when a major motion picture with A-list stars makes only $5,711 in its release. No, that's not a typo: Trespass Against Us made absolutely no money in its 2016 run, and the reasons become painfully clear as this snoozer unfolds. Rather than becoming a great crime drama or a terse family drama with violent resolutions, Trespass Against Us settles for far less and drags us down with it. The Cutler family lives on the very edge of accepted social norms. Living in the country and burning trash to keep warm, the family's travel trailers form a circle of defense against their illicit activities, lead by the father Colby (Brendan Gleeson). Jason Bourne looks and sounds terrific, but is it worth your hard-earned dollars? Review by Matt Cummings When The Bourne Identity exploded into theaters in 2002, one could feel the entire genre shift under them. Reacting to a post-9/11 world of the uber-spy state, we were also treated to a very human story of a man struggling to regain his identity. It re-energized James Bond, while establishing a new plateau for what a smart action film could be. But that feels like 20 years ago, as Jason Bourne results in a competent but utterly pedestrian affair, making us wonder if this series needs a similar bail out. The absolutely stunning Kubo and the Two Strings is a powerful home video experience, but loses us in its uneven storytelling. Review by Matt Cummings If 2016 has proven one thing, it's that the chasm of truly terrible film has never been larger. It's as if mainstream Hollywood dug itself a hole under the false impression that crap sells merely because their marketing acumen relieves all ills. So when a modestly-disappointing film arrives, we're almost ready to award it something for not failing. The gorgeous-looking The Secret Life of Pets feels strangely familiar, but is entirely adorable. Review by Matt Cummings As a pet owner and failed foster parent to three kittens (my wife and I actually kept all three), it goes without saying that my curiosity in The Secret Life of Pets went far above the cinematography, the animation, or really anything else. I just wanted to see what pets do - and think about - while their overlord oppressor goes to work. And while strangely familiar to the original Toy Story , this one more than makes up for it in cuteness and spectacular animation. Murphy has squandered his immense talent on cut-rate comedies and kid movies almost without reprieve for about twenty years now, leaving that electric performer from the ‘80s a dim memory. After his last misfire, 2012’s woebegone bomb A Thousand Words , Murphy entered into a long hiatus from acting. The hope then became that he would eventually reemerge as the Eddie Murphy of old, reinvested and committed in ways that have eluded him for so long, his tenure sleepwalking through paycheck movies at a close. Bad Moms is a naughty, nasty, raunchfest that doesn't quite deliver on Blu-ray. Review by Matt Cummings As we headed into the home stretch for the Summer 2016 box office, one thing was abundantly clear: it was the worst in terms of quality releases as far back as I've been writing about it. Luckily, Bad Moms arrived to make that long list of trash a bit more bearable while establishing itself as potentially the sleeper hit of the year. And yet its message is one that I hope doesn't resonate with stressed out moms ready to party it up at the expense of their children. The disappointing Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising arrives on video long enough for us to hate it even more. Review by Matt Cummings If 2014's Neighbors made a strong case for comedy of that year, it only lost out to 22 Jump Street due to that production's nearly perfect execution. The same cannot be said for Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising , a strange coming-of-age Frankenstein of comedy film that tries (and fails) to advance a feminist plot while wrapping that message in skits which don't quite pay off. Although it looks and sounds good, The Boss can't sustain the big laughs with a predictable plot. Review by Matt Cummings It wasn't too long ago that we were singing the praises of Actress Melissa McCarthy's parody Spy, a raunchy ride that actually gave her a story on which to scaffold her amazing comedic talents. Unfortunately, that moment now seems far away, as The Boss returns to McCarthy's tried (and failed) schtick of solid comedic moments filled with a ton of garbage that barely keeps our interests.
