Battle of the Sexes is solid, well-acted, but misses the bigger - and perhaps Oscar-winning - point. Review by Matt Cummings When tennis players Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs took to the floor of the Houston Astrodome in 1973, it did far more than bring home the ratings. The moment apparently electrified the country, spawning deep discussions about women's roles in the household and at the workplace. It lead to an eventual melting of barriers between the sexes in a way that no single event had done before. And while Battle of the Sexes relishes in this moment, it centers too much of its story around the match itself, keeping the better story - that one player struggling with much more than beating the other - on the sidelines. With Emma Stone and Steve Carell already at the top of the cast, tennis drama Battle Of The Sexes is now filling in its key supporting players. Andrea Riseborough and Elisabeth Shue signed up recently, and the latest addition is Sarah Silverman. The film, which boasts a script by Simon Beaufoy, will chronicle the rivalry between former tennis pro Bobby Riggs ( Carell ) and his 29-year-old opponent Billie Jean King ( Stone ), who hit the court for a legendary match in 1973 that (it was claimed) would establish if a female pro could ever beat a male in the sport. The event drew a huge audience of more than 50 million Americans, eager to see who would triumph. Silverman will play Gladys Heldman, the founder of the magazine World Tennis, and a staunch supporter of King and other female players in the early 1970s. According to Variety Rising star Brie Larson is in talks to play Billie Jean King in Fox Searchlight’s “ Battle of the Sexes ,” Steve Carell is currently set to play Bobby Riggs in the tennis drama. Larson would replace Emma Stone , who had to pass on the role due to a scheduling conflict. “Little Miss Sunshine” filmmakers Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris will direct from a script by Simon Beaufoy. Danny Boyle is producing under his Decibel Films banner along with Christian Colson and his company Cloud Eight.
