Story by Matt Cummings It was a weekend for the box office history books, as Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice set several worldwide and domestic records, but slightly under-performed here in the States. Warner Bros on Monday reported that BVSDOJ took in a domestic total of $166m, establishing a new March opening weekend record and the largest Easter opening, besting the $147.1m brought in by Furious 7 last year. It's also the largest opening for a DC Comics film, a record previously held by The Dark Knight Rises ($160.8m). Such a premiere had been a foregone conclusion, based on the extra year Director Zack Snyder took to bring the film to audiences. But with all the celebration at WB's Burbank studios, there's probably a lot of worrying going on. The number was actually a tad below expectations. Story by Matt Cummings The 2015 box office results are in, and some Hollywood studios are singing all the way to the bank. The overall domestic number hit a new record with just over $11b, beating 2013's $10.93b. That's a little lower than expected, mainly due to several high-profile disasters including Fantastic Four , Pixels , and Terminator: Genysis . This is the first time that the North American box office has surpassed $11b. For those of you who think such numbers are bloated due to the high cost of today's tickets, consider another number: attendance at NA theaters surpassed 1.33 billion moviegoers. That's 5% higher than 2014's 1.27b. But early on, things didn't look so good, even though everyone was expecting top numbers as far back as 2013. Story by Matt Cummings No matter how you slice it, this weekend's box office race was more of a dud than an amazing stratospheric accomplishment, with Tomorrowland winning, Pitch Perfect 2 at #2, and Age of Ultron set to cross $400 million domestically. So, why all then negative feelings? First the numbers: with the three-day weekend officially in the books, Tomorrowland took in paltry $32.9m/$41m while owning most of the IMAX screens, which was slightly higher than its projections. It eeked out a win against Pitch Perfect 2 , which crossed the $100m mark on Saturday, all but guaranteeing a sequel (oh, no please don't) with $38.5m. George Miller's dystopian spectacle Mad Max: Fury Road , took in a higher number as well, gassing up to $32.1m for the weekend. Age of Ultron set to pass $400 million domestically. Story by Matt Cummings No matter how you slice it, this weekend's box office race is gearing up to be a close one, with Tomorrowland and Pitch Perfect 2 in a close race for #1. With the three-day weekend officially casting off on Friday, Tomorrowland took in approximately $10.4 million, owning most of the IMAX screens - it should take in an estimated $33-35m for the weekend. However, that might not be enough to win it the top spot: that one might go to Pitch Perfect 2 . On Friday, the comedy-melody mashup took in approximately $10m, which should plpay out to a 3-day tally of $33-34m. It will also pass the $100m mark on Saturday, after only dropping 52% weekend-to-weekend. Coming in at number three is the George Miller dystopian spectacle Mad Max: Fury Road , dropping only 39%, which should see profit between $26-28m for the weekend. Story by Matt Cummings With Avengers: Age of Ultron passing $1 billion internationally this week, the film has been a massive success, and should eclipse Furious 7 as the top domestic film of 2015 by the end of this weekend. Still, the latest superhero team-up hasn't fared nearly as well as its 2012 predecessor: as of this posting (10 days since its North American release), it's off nearly $70 million. That's a lot, and it's soon about to be deposed from its two-week throne as Universal’s sequel Pitch Perfect 2 and Warner Brothers' Mad Max: Fury Road arrive. Each of these releases is looking to take in as much as $50 million each, which should easily overthrow Ultron . Based on early Friday estimates from both Variety and BoxOfficeMojo, the Rebel Wilson/Anna Kendrick musical comedy is drawing solid numbers, with a very good $20-$22m, which could see it finish the weekend between $48

Why did the massively-hyped ultimately 'fail' at the box office? Story by Matt Cummings It goes without saying that Marvel's Avengers: Age of Ultron has the most hyped (and anticipated) film of the year so far. WIth a marketing campaign hitting every sector, it was an accepted fact that the superhero team-up follow-up would rake in big bucks in its opening weekend. And while it beat out Furious 7's massive opening, it failed to overtake its better brother. According to BoxOfficeMojo, Ultron opened to $187.7 million in 4,276 theaters in North America. That puts it #2 behind the all-time leader, 2012's The Avengers. Worldwide, the film has made a staggering $627 million in only 12 days, surpassing Captain America: The First Avenger ($371m), Thor ($449m), Iron Man ($583m) and Iron Man 2 ($622m). A staggering amount of great films arrive in our May Movie Preview. Clint Barton will in fact appear in Marvel's Phase 3 Opener. Story by Matt Cummings With 2015 about to get ramped up with some serious blockbusters like Avengers: Age of Ultron , rumor has been raging for awhile about which hero(es) would survive or even return for Phase 3. Among those at the top of the "Soon to Be Unemployed List" was Clint Barton aka Hawkeye. Maligned through Phase 1's The Avengers , fans complained that Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) was underutilized, relegated to Loki's slave for the first 2/3 of the film. In fact, his role in Captain America: The Winter Soldier was gutted in favor of a tighter film, which ultimately needed him in the very last scene. But yesterday, THR released a story that clearly shows Hawkeye will not only survive Age of Ultron but will appear in at least one more film. But with each new trailer, we get a bit more of the story and characters that currently make up (and will eventually make up) Phase 3's lineup. In the final trailer from Director Joss Whedon, we get tantalizing new clues about who's to join the team, as well as more details about Ultron's plan to overtake humanity. From the looks of things, it appears that Ultron has assembled a far larger army that we've seen previously. But, it also appears The Avengers are ready for the challenge.
