Loot Crate Review: May 2015

Click below to see if Loot Crate delivers the goods with May 2015's Unite-themed box. Review by Matt Cummings After a series of very good Loot Crate boxes including March and April , May 2015's submission does more than its best to UNITE them with its awesomeness. The result is yet another great cornucopia of goodness for a very affordable price of $20. The monthly geek subscription box service is among dozens of entries vying for your hard-earned dollars, with Loot promising a nice return on that monthly subscription. Its hand-picked, cool geeky collection wrapped around a theme faces a lot of competition, but let's see why I think May undeniably delivers the goods. Loot's nondescript sex toy packaging makes my elderly neighbors nervous. A quick scissoring of the tape underneath and it's clear May is going to rock. Is that Green Ranger?! Upon cracking the case, we find The Power Rangers representing in a terrific t-shirt. This is consiste...

'Avengers: Age of Ultron' Opens to $180m

Why did the massively-hyped ultimately 'fail' at the box office? Story by Matt Cummings It goes without saying that Marvel's Avengers: Age of Ultron has the most hyped (and anticipated) film of the year so far. WIth a marketing campaign hitting every sector, it was an accepted fact that the superhero team-up follow-up would rake in big bucks in its opening weekend. And while it beat out Furious 7's massive opening, it failed to overtake its better brother. According to BoxOfficeMojo, Ultron opened to $187.7 million in 4,276 theaters in North America. That puts it #2 behind the all-time leader, 2012's The Avengers. Worldwide, the film has made a staggering $627 million in only 12 days, surpassing Captain America: The First Avenger ($371m), Thor ($449m), Iron Man ($583m) and Iron Man 2 ($622m). Back in The States, it was hoped that it could beat the $207.4m debut of the first Avengers : instead, it finished more than 9% behind. What Happened? S...

TV Review: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. "Love in the Time of Hydra"

Coulson’s abilities are questioned, as well they should be. Review by Brandon Wolfe When Gonzales (Edward James Olmos, another impressive “get” for the series), the head of the “real S.H.I.E.L.D.,” informs Hunter of all the reasons why Coulson is not fit to run the agency, it’s hard to argue with any of them. Coulson has been infused with alien DNA, leading him to make erratic decisions. The deaths that happened on his watch were indirectly his fault. Moreover, the success rate in the apprehension of villains under his command is a big, fat goose egg and he runs his unit more like a squishy den mother than a lead agent. Coulson is the pits, and it creates a sort of cognitive dissonance in the viewer when the person making the most sense is someone we’re supposed to immediately distrust because he dares to oppose the chief protagonist. If Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. were a smarter show, I’d think that perhaps it purposefully intended to call into question the competency of its hero...
