Second doll prequel is a cabbage patch of terror. Review by Brandon Wolfe The Annabelle preamble in The Conjuring was one of the best parts of one of the best contemporary horror films. Functioning as something of a freestanding short film within the larger narrative, the tale of two young nurses tormented in their apartment by the presence of a possessed doll was an uncommonly well-done horror chamber piece. That it told a story that was purported to be based in fact helped, but the subtlety on display in the sequence managed to burrow under the skin in ways that the usual sledgehammer approach in modern horror never could. The sequence was so memorable that Annabelle was gifted her own spin-off film a year later, though that film showcased none of the deftness of her debut and flailed about in trying to justify its existence. ANNABELLE HELMER JOHN LEONETTI TO DIRECT ‘ WISH UPON ’ FOR BROAD GREEN PICTURES John Leonetti, known for directing ANNABELLE and for his cinematography on box office successes including THE CONJURING and INSIDIOUS, has signed on to direct WISH UPON, a horror thriller for Broad Green Pictures. The feature, named to the 2015 Black List, was written by Barbara Marshall (“The Listener”) and will be produced by Busted Shark Production’s Sherryl Clark (VIRAL, CLOVERFIELD). The movie is expected to begin production in the fall. The Conjuring prequel Annabelle loses steam after a compelling opening. We've been espousing on the renaissance of classic horror films like The Conjuring , Sinister , and Insidious for quite some time. Both have re-introduced fans to a better type of terror built upon simple but effective gags without showering the audience with too much blood and not enough compelling story, ala 2013's Evil Dead . The Conjuring origin story Annabelle tries to equal its predecessor, delivering solid but unimpressive results.
