Big news out of Westeros today, as the first piece of casting for the Game Of Thrones prequel series has fallen into place. Naomi Watts will lead the ensemble for the new show.
Based on an idea by Thrones novelist/overlord George RR Martin, the show has been turned into a working concept by Jane Goldman, who will be steering it going forward. Set thousands of years before the stories now unfolding, it chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the White Walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend... It’s not the story we think we know.
All that HBO has released about Watts' character is that she'll be a socialite with a dark secret. Naturally, the casting of a big name gives us flashbacks to Sean Bean anchoring Season One before losing his head. GOT veteran Vince Gerardis and Bloodline co-creator Daniel Zelman will also be part of the writer/producer team. Expect this one to start picking up speed, though HBO has yet to announce when it'll hit the cable channel. After all, it first has to wrap up Thrones itself, with the final season due next year. Here's Everything We Know on that front.
