Stop the rumor mill and crank up the fact cannon: Kristen Wiig is indeed joining Wonder Woman 2. Word had been going around that the actor would be stepping in as Diana Prince’s next nemesis, and the news has now been confirmed by director Patty Jenkins herself.
Writing on Twitter, Jenkins said: “So excited to confirm the thrilling news. Yes! It’s true! So incredibly lucky to welcome the sensationally talented Kristen Wiig to our Wonder Woman family. Can’t wait to finally work with one of my favorites. And SO excited by what we have planned.”
Jenkins also confirmed via a hashtag that Wiig will be playing Cheetah — a villain who’s appeared in various comic incarnations through the years. The current version is Barbara Ann Minerva, who has feline powers granted to her by ancient plant god Urzkartaga. The sequel, which will see Gal Gadot return as the titular heroine, is thought to be set during the 1980s in the Cold War, once again placing it long before the events of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League.
Little else is known about the superhero sequel at the moment, but with a November 2019 release date expect more casting announcements in the near future ahead of the shoot.
