THR is reporting Zachary Levi is going to be Earth's mightiest mortal. The actor will star in the DC comic book adaptation Shazam !, which follows a boy named Billy Batson, who can transform into an adult superhero by uttering the magic word "Shazam!" The name is an acronym of the ancient world gods and historical figures Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles and Mercury, from which the big Batson derives his heroic attributes when in adult form. David F. Sandberg is directing Shazam! for New Line. The studio is high on Sandberg and sees him as a homegrown talent after putting out his first feature Lights Out in 2016, and releasing the director's Annabelle: Creation, the latest installment of The Conjuring universe. Review by Brandon Wolfe Ever since O Brother, Where Art Thou? , George Clooney has been a staple of some of the Coen Brothers’ sillier offerings in the 21st Century. Clooney has also appeared in their iffy Intolerable Cruelty as well as in the much stronger Burn After Reading . He has fashioned such a close working relationship with the Coens that he has now been entrusted with directing a script they’ve written. But just because you’ve worked with the Coens don’t make you the Coens. The Coens wrote the script for Suburbicon in 1986, shortly after completing Blood Simple , yet never produced it, for whatever reason. But, upon seeing the finished product, it’s clearly of a piece with their oeuvre. The acidic black comedy, the comically boneheaded characters, the caper gone awry, the creatively gruesome deaths are all very familiar. Variety is reporting Renee Zellweger (“Chicago”) will star as Judy Garland in a new movie about the show business legend’s final concerts in London. Pathé and Calamity Films are behind “ Judy ” and principal photography is set for next February, in London. Opening in the English capital in the winter of 1968 as Garland arrives for a five-week run of sell-out concerts, the movie will also recount the icon’s battles with management, and relationships with musicians and fans. So it is as Halloween approaches, and his sequel Boo 2! A Madea Halloween has swept all competition aside this weekend, with $21.6 million according to studio estimates. The critic-proof comic horror movie faced little challenge from Gerard Butler's latest action pic, the delayed disaster movie Geostorm . With terrible reviews, the film launched in second place, taking in $13.3 million, hardly a good start for a movie that cost more than $120 million to make (in comparison, the latest Madea entry's production price tag was $25 million).
