THR is reporting Carey Mulligan will star as a Vietnam war correspondent in the film On the Other Side for Topic, First Look Media's newly branded entertainment studio. Based on the book On the Other Side: 23 Days With the Vietcong , the true story centers on Kate Webb, a trailblazing journalist for UPI who would pave the way for all female war correspondents. Surviving fierce battles and 23 days of captivity, she emerged from the jungles of Cambodia armed with one of the most unlikely stories to come out of the Vietnam War. The film marks the latest move for Topic, whose parent company, First Look, co-financed and produced the best picture Oscar winner Spotlight. THR is reporting Maya Rudolph and Terry Crews have joined the voice cast of animated feature The Willoughbys , along with Martin Short, Jane Krakowski and Sean Cullen . The newcomers join previously announced star and producer Ricky Gervais , who will narrate the Bron Studios animation that is based on the popular children's book by The Giver author Lois Lowry. The Willoughbys follows four kids — Tim, Jane and the twins — after they are abandoned by their selfish parents and embark on a wild adventure into the world, where they find a new modern family of their own. Short and Krakowski will voice Father and Mother Willoughby, parents so in love with each other they forget they even have children, while Rudolph will be the voice of the kindly Nanny, and Crews will play the candy mogul, Commandor Melanoff. Top Gun 2 has a new call sign. The followup to the 1986 action film will be titled Top Gun: Maverick , Tom Cruise revealed in an interview with Access Hollywood on Friday. Oblivion director Joseph Kosinski is circling the project, which will follow fighter pilots grappling with new drone technologies that are making their old style of flying obsolete. Cruise said the film will shoot within a year. The original film, which starred Cruise as hot shot pilot Maverick, was directed by the late Tony Scott, and has become a classic of pop culture. Tra-la-laaaa!!!! Rama is back. This is certainly “ Captain Underpants ” first movie, but does it live up to what the title suggests, ‘epic?’ Let’s just put it this way, the humor doesn’t land most of the time. It doesn’t do enough exaggeration, which usually can make kids laugh, kids who are clearly this movie’s target audience. It tries too hard to make their parents laugh instead. At least not until halfway through the end when the story busts out a weapon that can enlarge or shrink objects. But what it lacks in funny, “Captain Underpants” makes up for it in characters that entertain. THR is reporting Hailee Steinfeld is in negotiations to star in Paramount's Transformers spinoff Bumblebee . Travis Knight, who directed the stop-motion movie Kubo and the Two Strings, is helming the project. Bumblebee is the yellow and black striped Autobot that appears as one of the main characters in the Transformers film series. Plot details are being kept on the dark side of the moon, but it is known that Steinfeld will play a tomboy who also holds a job as a mechanic after school. It was smooth sailing to the top spot at the box office for " Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales ," but the waters were choppier for the Dwayne Johnson comedy " Baywatch ." Studio estimates on Sunday say the fifth installment of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise commandeered $62.2 million in its first three days in theaters. The Johnny Depp-starrer is projected to take in $76.6 million over the four-day holiday weekend. It was the second-lowest domestic opening for the nearly $4 billion franchise, but the latest film, which cost a reported $230 million to produce, has massive international appeal. As shooting is due to kick off soon on another round of crazed superhero action for Deadpool and friends, the cast is growing by one.
